At the Copa
Susan's grandmother Anita was said to have worked as a showgirl at New York City's Copacabana, a popular and lively nightclub in the 1940s. The club eventually became the number one hotspot for the rich and famous, where every night seemed like New Year's Eve. Since then, it's become the inspiration to a song, a play and a film. Check out some things you may have not known about this famous club.
Did you know?
- The Copacabana opened on November 10th, 1940 at 10 East 60th Street. After over 50 years, owner Peter Dorn moved the club to a new location in 1992.
- When the club opened in the 1940s, black performers weren't allowed in, and Harry Belafonte was banned in 1944. It wasn't until the 1950s that the owner changed his mind, and Harry returned as a headliner.
- Since its original move, the club has relocated twice due to the building of new offices, and a third time because of an NYC subway expansion.
- Known for its music and nightlife, the Copa also had an incredible menu. Entrees ranged from $2.50 for a filet of lemon sole, to $4.25 for roast stuffed turkey, or $6.50 for filet mignon.
- Entertainers such as Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Jr., Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Bette Milder, Wayne Newton, Groucho Marx, George Carlin and Jackie Gleason have all performed there.
- Martin and Lewis' last performance was at the Copacabana in 1956.
- The club was used as a setting for several films such as "Goodfellas," "Raging Bull," "Tootsie," and "Carlito's Way."
- Actor Tony Lip, best known for his portrayal as crime boss Carmine Lupertazzi in "The Sopranos" used to work at the Copacabana, starting in 1961 as a maitre d' and supervisor.
