Close Your Eyes And Open Your Ears - The Blind Audition
Tonight I will be handed a microphone as I walk onto a stage in front of a live audience and I will begin to sing a song backed by a professional band. This is nothing new. It's what I do. I sing. I entertain audiences. I perform with great musicians. So, what makes this performance different from all of the others?
Tonight, the stage is NBC's new singing competition, The Voice. The band isn't just any band, this is The Voice Band and it's made up of some serious pros who have years of experience playing with the likes of Cher, Pink, Mariah Carey, and Janet Jackson, just to name a few! The audience isn't just filled with fans. Sitting up front and center are four celebrity "coaches" - Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera, and Blake Shelton. The coaches are taxed with one task... To find America's best voice. They cannot see me, only hear me. If they decide they want to mentor me they must push a button which will swivel their chair and let me know they want me on their team. If more than one coach pushes their button then it's up to me to decide which coach has the most to offer me and find out why they believe I should choose them as my coach. I'd be happy to work with any of them, but of course I have my favorites. So, in order of preference I'd like to work with:
1. Christina - Her experience and years of training set the bar. Her voice is perfect and she is an entertainment icon.
2. Cee Lo - His voice is out of this world and his larger-than-life personality make him seem very accessible. I've chosen to sing his hit song, "Forget You" for the Blind Audition so it would be extra cool if he turns around.
3. Adam - He's got a great voice, he's a good writer, and his years on the road with Maroon 5 would make his DIY touring experience very helpful.
4. Blake - I must admit, I don't know much about him, but what I have heard of his voice is great. He also seems to be a bit of a maverick and I like that about him.
Whatever happens, whoever's team I end up on, or even if no one turns around and I go home to Austin... I'm so grateful for the opportunity. For now, it's time to suit up and head over to the studio. I'll write more tonight when I get back to the hotel! Oh and my little brother, Diego is getting married today back in our hometown of Fort Payne, AL!! Congrats to him and my new sister in-law, Angie!
