Gene Stein
Executive Producer

Gene Stein serves as executive producer on NBC's new drama series "The Cape."

Stein is currently head of television at BermanBraun. Last year he developed the drama series "Mercy" for NBC, as well as the comedy series "Accidentally on Purpose," which he executive produced for CBS. He is now supervising a drama pilot for the Syfy network, "Alphas."

Stein, a native of New York City, relocated to Los Angeles to begin his career as a programming associate at ABC. Promoted to the development department, he was part of the team that launched "Wonder Years," "China Beach," "Coach," and "Family Matters." He then worked as a vice-president at ABC Productions, where he shepherded pilots with writers such as Amy Sherman-Palladino ("Gilmore Girls") and Linwood Boomer ("Malcolm in the Middle").

Recruited by CBS, Stein was a key member of the programming team that helped bring about CBS's ratings resurgence. He initially served as Director of Drama Series Development and helped develop "Early Edition," "Nash Bridges," and Paul Haggis's critically acclaimed "EZ Streets."

Later he was named to head the comedy development department as vice president and later senior vice president. Additionally, he helped launch and was an early champion of "Everybody Loves Raymond" and developed "King of Queens" and "Becker."

Partnering with producer Nina Wass, Stein was based at Touchstone Television/ABC Studios for eight years. Together they executive produced five series and 10 drama, comedy, and animation pilots for ABC, CBS, NBC, and FBC, as well as developing projects for HBO, Showtime, Lifetime and ABC Family. Their show "Less Than Perfect" aired for four seasons on ABC.

Stein has written episodes of television programs such as "Cheers," "Murphy Brown," and "Golden Girls." He has also published a novel and a collection of short stories. He won the Scott Newman Award for an episode of "Murphy Brown" and his novel was called "bewitching" and a "triumph" by The New York Times.

Stein is a summa cum laude graduate of Yale College. He received his M.B.A. from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business and has a master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism as well.

He lives in Los Angeles with his partner and their two daughters.
