We've all heard about the incredible nutritional value of omega-3-rich fish, and its popularity is up there as a lean-protein option. When it comes to fish, selecting low-mercury varieties (wild Alaskan salmon, trout or black cod) is always ideal. Here's a dynamic nutritional duo I showcased to the BL contestants that may help minimize mercury intake.
Betcha didn't know that fish and a tangy fruit salsa may be a match made in nutrition heaven. According to a nutrition and environmental health study, polyphenol-rich fruit such as mango, pineapple, pomegranates and berries can potentially reduce your body's absorption of mercury from fish (some studies suggest by a whopping 80%!), making the two a perfect pair. Salmon with mango salsa anyone?
4 ounces of grilled wild salmon = 233 calories
2 tablespoons of mango salsa = 12 calories
Total = a skinny 245 calories!
Now that's what I call a nutritional knockout!
