Neeko O.J. Skervin

Contestant

Omar "Neeko" Skervin was born November 16, 1984 in the town of Peterborough, located in the United Kingdom. Raised by a single mother, he attended Watergall Junior Primary School in his younger years, and although Neeko was usually shy and quiet, he enjoyed participating in school plays and drama activities.

Neeko then attended Walton Comprehensive School where his interest in acting and music blossomed. But in his ninth year of secondary school his interest waned due to peer pressure from friends who encouraged him to skip lessons, and his grades dropped, along with his confidence level. At age 17 he took odd jobs to survive, but was unhappy with his life.

He became determined to improve his life and go to college and returned to his study of acting and music. He temporarily enrolled in the Peterborough Regional College, but once again self-doubt set in and he dropped out, spending the next several years aimlessly seeking direction. Realizing his mistake, at age 21 he set forth to try again.

While researching acting courses, he came upon the idea to try for open auditions and found an opportunity to meet some of Hollywood's leading casting agents. Still wracked with self-doubt, he brought his mother Shirley along to the audition, but was still daunted at seeing a long line of hundreds of other hopefuls waiting for their chance. Shirley reassured him and nudged him forward.

Nervous but determined, Neeko pressed on, discouraged yet again to find the auditions were to be in front of all the applicants plus four judges. He made it through the audition but was certain he had failed... and found himself in utter shock when his name ended up being called - he was going to Los Angeles!

And when he arrived and met with the agents, he was successfully signed and so he moved to Los Angeles. However, it was not smooth sailing. Save for a few small gigs, acting opportunities didn't come, and he was living in a hostel house with 20 other people and working as a waiter to pay the bills. Then his agency dropped him. Then a casting director told him he shouldn't have moved from the U.K. before building his acting resume and that she had never seen an audition calling for a "black British guy." But he had come too far and by then had learned to summon up his determination and courage, so this time he didn't give up - and within one week, he was called out to audition for... a "black British guy."

After two callbacks, Neeko won the part - a lead role in a TV series... "Siberia."
