Harpreet Turka | Contestant
Harpreet, always bright and imaginative and with a love for writing and the performing arts, took part in plays at school, taking on lead roles with a powerful voice and presence. After facing racist ridicule from fellow students for wearing a turban from his family's native India, Harpreet set aside his acting goals. In high school he found a love for sports, English and science; he excelled academically and became a varsity athlete and was named MVP as he led his school's football team to a Provincial Championship.
After graduating he made the Team Manitoba provincial team and led them to a national football championship for the first time in the history of the tournament, winning a Gold Medal, and became a National All-Star. This opened the door for him to sign with the Winnipeg Rifles of the CJFL, where he played three seasons and became their all-time leading rusher, and was named a National All-star once again.
Upon leaving the Rifles he played for a University in Alberta while pursuing a career in political science, but his season was cut short due to injury. Deciding to try a different field and with an aim toward public service, upon returning home he became involved in local politics and ran for public office. Though he received praise for his platforms involving lower taxes and immigration reform, he was unsuccessful. He walked away humbled, but energized by the process and, with a resurgence of confidence, he returned to his dream of acting, which has led him to "Siberia."
