Max found a dead weasel in a novelty store that was stuffed and equipped with a fortune telling dice in its stomach - the perfect item to sell on their website! Sean tries to talk his boss off this awful ledge by mentioning their typical customers' sophisticated and debonair tastes... very similar to those of Max himself. Max appreciates the compliment, and frankly couldn't agree more, but the weasel stays. Suddenly, Lorna shows up at work and announces that she's set up Sean on a blind date with a wonderfully attractive man! Sean is mortified... could this not wait until after work?! As Sean ushers his mother away, Max's twisted ego incorrectly connects the dots. Oh my gosh... Sean has a crush on him!
Sean just got Ellie full time and doesn't think it's right to jump back into dating. But Lorna set him up with a periodontist... gums... lotta money... his name is Chase and he'll be expecting Sean for dinner on Saturday! As a matter of fact, Lorna is dating Chase's father, whom Sean might remember as the manager of one of her mattress stores back in the day. When Liz, Max and Hunter overhear Sean was in a mattress commercial as a kid, they rush to a computer and look it up. Lorna had Sean fill in for his father, but the dialogue wasn't changed! Max finds the spot more disturbing than an experimental film he once saw in Germany. Humiliated, Sean exclaims he already has plans with Ellie on Saturday, so Lorna will have to cancel.
Sean wants to have a movie night with Ellie on Saturday, but she has plans of her own. There's this party, and this guy Jake might be there... Liz likes the sound of that! Sean is bummed Ellie doesn't want to hang out with him, but he understands, she's just his precious little everything that's all. Oh my gosh, Liz thinks Sean's becoming his mother! Sean laughs it off, but soon realizes she's right. When Sean's father left Lorna, she clung to him for emotional support... and now Sean's doing the same thing to Ellie. He so does not want that to happen, so you know what... on Saturday, Sean is going on that date! Liz lets Sean know that even though he's been out of the game for a while, everyone's still doing the same things to each other. How comforting.
While looking up information on his date at work, Sean discovers a most unsettling tidbit of information: there are two periodontists named Chase Graham in the Chicago area! One looks like a Spartan fighting gum disease... and the other looks like straight gum disease. Liz and Hunter offer to join Sean just in case the bad Chase shows up; then they can play it off as a group outing. Sean thanks them and resigns himself to fate. But as he's walking to the break room, Sean sees the fortune telling weasel lying around. He picks it up and begs it to send a nice, attractive man to his door that night. Just as he does this, Max walks by and becomes increasingly convinced that Sean is falling madly in love with him! It's a curse Max carries, this irresistible magnetism.
On the night of his date, Sean goes over the plan with Liz and Hunter at his house. If the guy is cute, they scram; if he's not, they stay. The doorbell rings, and Sean takes a deep breath... this is it. But when Sean opens the door, Max is standing in the hallway. Max has stopped by because he wants to clear the air about Sean's obvious obsession with him. Sean falsely admits to being attracted to Max just to shoo him away before his real date arrives. When the doorbell rings again soon after, Sean opens it and finds the hot Chase standing there... he closes the door and shoves Liz and Hunter out the back entrance. Sean runs around trying to get everything in order, but he's been out of the game for a while and is totally flustered. Just then he smells something... oh no! His hors d'oeuvres are burning!
Crisis averted, Sean finally lets Chase in and tries to make sure everything is perfect. But he's too worried about Ellie to focus on his date. The app he installed on his phone shows Ellie passed her party address, and as Sean frantically calls, he realizes she left her phone in a cab. Chase offers to reschedule, but Sean is determined not to mess things up. It'll only be a moment. He tries to placate Chase by turning on the TV, but his old commercial pops up from Ellie and Liz's previous viewing; and in his rush to get the video off the screen, Sean breaks the television. Chase decides to leave, just as Lorna enters to yell at Sean for ignoring her calls. Chase tells Sean everyone in his family is weirdly obsessed with one another and exits. Well, that couldn't have gone better...
Lorna cancels her date with Chase's father - if his son doesn't want to be with Sean, well then she doesn't want to be with him. Sean is bummed about the way his date turned out, but he appreciates his mother's loyalty. You know, he's starting to understand why she became so close to him after Sean's father left. Sean finally gets a hold of Ellie and confirms she's okay. With nothing left to do, he agrees to watch a move with him mom and just relax. Ellie arrives home soon after, to find her dad asleep, his head resting on Lorna's shoulder. They really have to work on their family dynamics!
Sean decides to go on a blind date that his mother set him up on... what could possibly go wrong? Robert Gant guest stars.
