Andy Samberg is in his sixth season on "Saturday Night Live."
With the many roles he plays on the show, Samberg's characters include the hilarious, trendy co-host T'Shane on "Deep House Dish", the "Weekend Update" correspondent Cathy, and his spot-on impression of Mark Wahlberg. While a mainstay in sketches, Samberg, along with "SNL" writers Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, are best known for their innovative series of "SNL Digital Shorts."
The trio, known as "The Lonely Island", brought viewers absurdist shorts running the gamut from faux music videos, featuring Natalie Portman performing an expletive-laden rap and "Iran So Far Away," a love song to Iranian President Mahmoud Amadinejad to recurring shorts like the hastily assembled sci-fi series "Laser Cats". The trio's most recent short, "Shy Ronnie" with Rihanna was just nominated for a 2010 Emmy for "Outstanding Original Music & Lyrics". The Lonely Island released their debut album "Incredibad" in February of 2009, which is the first comedy album to reach the #1 spot on iTunes.
"Lazy Sunday" - a collaboration between "SNL" alum Chris Parnell and the trio - was an undeniable online phenomenon that amassed over one million hits on YouTube.com within days of airing on "SNL." The short "burrowed its way into the nation's cultural consciousness" (The New York Times, 12/27/05) and sparked its own legion of Internet imitations and was the short that established the group's staying power.
Samberg and company were awarded a 2007 Emmy for "Outstanding Original Music & Lyrics" for their digital short with pop sensation Justin Timberlake – "Dick in a Box." The trio received a 2009 Emmy nomination for their digital short "Motherlover" with Justin Timberlake, Susan Sarandon, and Patricia Clarkson, and also a Wired Magazine "Rave Award" in 2006, alongside geneticists and fellow online pioneers
Samberg can next be seen in the upcoming feature films, "What's Your Number" alongside Chris Evans and Anna Faris, and "Friends With Benefits" starring Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake, and Woody Harrelson.
Samberg hosted the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, which was the highest rated Movie Awards since 2004. Samberg's vocal talents were showcased in Chris Miller's animated feature "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" alongside Bill Hader, Anna Faris and James Caan. Samberg also starred opposite Paul Rudd, Jason Segel and Rashida Jones in director John Hamberg's "I Love You, Man" for Paramount Pictures. He voiced the lead character, Ham III, in Fox Studios animated film "Space Chimps". His feature debut, "Hot Rod," was directed by Akiva Schaffer and also starred Jorma Taccone, Ian McShane, Sissy Spacek, Isla Fisher, and Bill Hader.
Starting out in Los Angeles, Samberg worked with Schaffer and Taccone as "The Lonely Island," whose short films were showcased on the popular "untelevised television network" show and website: Channel 101.com. Some of their popular shorts included the "O.C." parody, "The `Bu," and their full length pilot, "Awesometown."
Samberg lives in New York City. His birthday is August 18th.
