Character Bio

Detective Luisito Calderon transferred to Manhattan East Homicide from Narcotics, where he was a detective for eight years and worked undercover for three years before that. He is married to a woman he loves. Together they have a daughter - and four stepchildren from two of his wife's previous boyfriends, who are petty criminals and always getting in trouble that Calderon, as head of this extended household, has to get them out of at the request of his wife, for the sake of his stepchildren. As a result, Calderon's life outside the squad is chaos. Although he would die for his wife and children, the demands of his job combined with those of his family keep him constantly on the boil. He never knows when his phone rings if it's going to be a child needing to be picked up at school or groceries needing to be picked up on the way home - or a baby daddy having been picked up on a misdemeanor - which means every time his phone rings he wants to whip it through the wall.

Having a lot of kids at home whom he loves as his own makes crimes against children something that Calderon takes even more personally than cops in general already do. And Calderon keeps a lid on himself even more tightly than most because he's afraid of his temper, which is something he's gone on a journey to learn to control. Running marathons helps with the stress - as does having his old partner from Narcotics, Detective Augie Blando, working with him in Homicide, which helps Calderon see the humor in things more than he might otherwise...
