Detective Jane Timoney
|Character Bio
Detective Jane Timoney has recently transferred into the elite Manhattan East Homicide Squad, where she is the only female detective. In her previous squad, Midtown Homicide, she had the highest homicide-closure rate three years in a row - which, combined with her solving of a landmark case, got her to Manhattan East. Unlike many of her colleagues, Jane does not come from a family of cops. Instead, she grew up in an Irish bar on the east side of Manhattan, owned and run by her father, which was frequented by cops and criminals alike. So she's well acquainted with both sides of the law.
Jane recently moved in with her boyfriend Matt Webb, a divorced contractor with a struggling family firm and a six-year-old son. Matt's relationship with his remarried ex-wife Tricia is rough at best - and Tricia is the kind of woman who pushes every last one of Jane's buttons. Not to mention, Jane isn't that comfortable around children to begin with, and now she's going to be spending three nights out of seven with a kid still dealing with the fallout of his parent's divorce.
Jane's mother died when she was 13 and her younger sister Maureen was 5, leaving Jane and her father Desmond to keep the bar afloat and the family together. As a result, Jane and Des have an unbreakable bond - but the experience took a toll on Jane in ways she may not even be conscious of. However, Des' confidence in his oldest daughter did give Jane the self-esteem necessary to move up through the ranks of the NYPD without ever doubting herself, her instincts, or her right to be there. She may not be tactful, or sympathetic, or even pleasant, but she knows how to do her job, and work is her salvation. It remains to be seen whether she'll be successful at anything else in her life...
