Detective Evrard Velerio

Detective Evrard Velerio was Jane's partner when she was working Midtown Homicide. He was shot in the arm working a case and went on medical/administrative leave, working at the Chief of Detectives' office at 1 Police Plaza, which is where he still was when Jane was transferred to Manhattan East. He and Jane have an easy and real friendship, in part because Evrard is a man who picks his battles and doesn't let too many things get to him. He's also a charismatic enough guy that if someone was on the fence about whether or not to like Jane, Evrard's regard for her would make them decide she was all right.
Evrard's half African-American and half Dominican, the latter on his mother's side. He grew up in Washington Heights, in upper Manhattan, a tough neighborhood with many obstacles to overcome. He understands Spanish completely, but in his youth as he tried to distance himself from the streets where he grew up and connect with his father, he chose not to speak it with an accent. He's a proud, educated man who believes in the good that law enforcement can do. He saw his friends trapped by poor choices and decisions, and he let them fall by the wayside as he concentrated on his own path to success. That made him the odd man out and a bit of a loner, but he has his own interests to fill his time - sports, music and women. Evrard's married now, but he's been married more than once and has children from those previous marriages. What happened to one of those children is a tragic story waiting to be revealed...
