Ask the EP: Sarah and Drew

Will John Corbett be in more episodes than last year? I know he was in some, but he is such a great aspect of the story.
- Dave Gyza

John Corbett has a four-episode arc this season. I thought the relationship between his and Lauren Graham's characters was so powerful last year; we wanted to push the conflict further. This year's arc has to do with Seth's struggles with his substance abuse and Sarah, torn between being there for Seth even as it becomes an obstacle to her relationship with Mr. Cyr (Jason Ritter).

Will Sarah finally catch a break?
- Nora O'Brien

I'm very excited that Jason Ritter is coming back to the show this year. His character will play through much of the season, and we will get to see Sarah in a long-term relationship. I think the chemistry between them is so great. I especially look forward to the arc coming up when Seth, Sarah's ex-husband (John Corbett) returns, complicating her relationship with Ritter. Lauren Graham has such great chemistry with both those actors, and I'm excited to see her navigate those waters.

Can Drew find something that makes him feel more comfortable in his own skin? He's great, but watching what he goes through is painfully agonizing! Give this kid some small success please!
- Barb Gottschalk

Drew gets his first girlfriend this year. It's so charming to watch him get past his own shyness and awkwardness to make it happen with her. We have other good storylines with Drew later this season - one where we see him volunteer to read to kids at a library, trying his best to beef up his college applications; unfortunately, he doesn't prove to be a great orator.
