Al Roker ('Today') and Nancy O'dell ('Access Hollywood') Team For Ninth Year To Host Live, High-Definition Coverage of the '121st Tournament Of Roses Parade' On January 1, 2010
NBC Continues Its 83-Year Tradition of Broadcasting Popular International Event
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - December 2, 2009 - Al Roker, the weatherman and feature reporter for NBC's "Today," and Nancy O'Dell, co-anchor of the daily entertainment news magazine show "Access Hollywood," will reunite for the ninth year to co-host NBC's live, high-definition coverage of the "121st Tournament of Roses Parade" from Pasadena, California on Friday, January 1, 2010 (11 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. ET).
This will be Roker's thirteenth year hosting the popular annual event, and the eleventh consecutive year for O'Dell. NBC has been broadcasting the New Year's Day parade for 83 years, beginning on radio in 1927 and then televising the event beginning in 1954.
With a 2010 theme of "A Cut Above The Rest," the parade will pay tribute to everyday heroes and those who strive to make every effort better than the last. Serving as this year's Grand Marshal will be Captain Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III, the heroic pilot who masterfully landed US Airways Flight 1549 on New York City's Hudson River after its two engines lost thrust following a bird strike. He and his crew safely guided the plane to an emergency water landing, saving the lives of the 155 people aboard.
The most popular New Year's Day celebration in the world, the parade will feature 41 lavish floral floats, 22 spectacular marching bands from as far away as Japan, and 23 high-stepping equestrian teams. This year's Rose Queen and her court will also appear, along with special guests on spectacular floats.
One of this year's many parade highlights is the longest single body float in parade history, featuring Tillman, the Guinness World Record holder for fastest skateboarding dog. He and his bulldog friends will snowboard down a special ski run created for the float. Other parade highlights include the Ohio State School for the Blind Marching Band, a "Ship of Dreams" float featuring a three-masted vessel with pyrotechnics, a float saluting the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and one celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. Also featured will be a float honoring and featuring men from the original Tuskegee Airmen fighter group from World War II.
The Pasadena police department estimates that at least 1 million spectators will line the five-and-a-half mile parade route. Tens of millions of people worldwide watch the telecast every year.
Arthur Forrest is the executive producer/director, Tom Patino is the line producer, Carol Kahl is the supervising producer, and Stephanie Prescott is the coordinating producer for NBC Entertainment.
