Episode 4
First Things First
Ok, so maybe somebody needed to translate for Donny Deutsch. When he said, "I want to see something out of the box," he meant, "I want to see something out of the box that will appeal to the target market and make them want to purchase the product or at the very least build a brand essence for the product." This is Dove Body Wash! I'm not looking at any market research but I'm pretty sure the target market is women … ya think?
Clearly, our two groups Magna and Net Worth are not loaded with marketing or advertising people, but surely they have at least worked with some a time or two. Where was the common sense? It seems to me that both teams skipped over any kind of target market research or marketing strategy and went straight to creative execution. And somewhere along the way team Magna confused creativity with shock value, a trend that unfortunately has been far too prevalent lately. Did Mr. Deutsch fail to mention that these commercials would be airing in the United States?
On a positive note, Net Worth's idea had some value (except the runner should have been female). The execution of that idea … well, it stunk! Dove Body Wash, key word: body i.e. NOT face wash … are you with me? Once again, John was the star of his team and I think Kristen recognized that immediately. At this point a good leader uses a star like John to propel the entire team forward. A not-so-good leader is intimidated and threatened by the star's talent and tries to marginalize him or her and shine the light on themselves. Well, this strategy works only in the rare case where the not-so-good leader is equally talented and can deliver the goods. Clearly John's vision did not come through at the shoot and the only person responsible for the shoot is the director … our not-so-good leader Kristen. Mr. Trump, as usual, recognized this and … KYF!
Magna, you dodged a bullet and Michael, you're by no means out of the doghouse. I hope you step it up in the next project … I feel Mr. Trump is just looking for a reason! As for Magna's commercial: the look on Carolyn's face said it all. Let's all be thankful that Donny Deutsch is not the one looking for an Apprentice!
Next week I'm looking forward to someone, besides John, to show they have got what it takes to work for 'ol D.T., errr … Mr. Trump! And let's hope both teams put strategy first and execution second.
