Episode 8
Elizabeth goes down in Apprentice history!
Andy is like an alley cat with nine lives. His ability to defend himself, in spite of the onslaught of attacks from his team is remarkable. Andy has a distinct advantage over his teammates. Although going to the boardroom is a dreadful experience, it offers you a unique advantage, valuable face-time with Trump. Andy has had the opportunity to learn DT’s likes and dislikes, he has also gathered important clues as to the type of candidate Trump is looking for. Unlike most job interviews -- where you know the position that you’re vying for and you are able to prepare accordingly -- this interview process is for a position that is not revealed until the end of the interview process.
The teams were instructed by DT that they were to work at the Deutsch Advertising agency, headed by Donny Deutsch. Donny’s agency is one of the top ad agencies in the country.
Elizabeth, who has a background in marketing, was project manager for her team. Her previous leadership stint (as PM during the Vanilla Mint Crest task) did not go so well, which made this a must-win situation for her.
Andy, who was eager to establish himself as a serious contender, was Mosaic’s project manager. Andy quickly sprung into action and came up with a theme that was on the mark. Donny Deutsch instructed the teams to focus on the emotional elements of police service. Andy came up with a theme that was nothing short of brilliant. Instead of supporting this concept, Maria suggested more sex appeal. (This coming from a woman who wore high heels during the dog washing task).
Meanwhile, early on Elizabeth failed to gain the confidence of her teammates. In fact, during their planning session, the only person who leveled with Elizabeth about her lackluster performance was Kevin. Unfortunately, she committed several critical leadership errors. The first error was her inability to develop a plan of action. Second, she was unable to execute the weak plan that was in place. Last, she had no confidence in her team or herself.
When Kevin’s patience wore thin, he said that Elizabeth, his project manager, sucked. At one point, he even told Elizabeth to shut up! Normally, I am opposed to the use of such demeaning language in the workplace, however, in this case it was totally appropriate. Elizabeth refused to listen to the team and Kevin had to do something to get through her nonsense.
Donny Deutsch and his executives decided that team Mosaic’s ad campaign was far superior to that of team Apex. As a result, Andy and his team received the reward (going to Times Square to view their ad) and Elizabeth’s team had to face another boardroom.
During the boardroom, Raj admitted that he pushed the military idea because it was the only idea they had. I would have to disagree with him. Raj did not allow any other ideas to surface during the brainstorming session. He was obsessed with the military idea and no one could persuade him otherwise -- not even the project manager.
In the boardroom, Elizabeth was unable to withstand the barrage of insults and complaints from her teammates. Team Apex was unanimous that Elizabeth was a terrible project manager. Jennifer M. was particularly vicious in her comments.
The true shocker of the night was DT’s decision not to allow Elizabeth to bring two of her team members into the boardroom to afford her the opportunity to defend herself -- a privilege granted every project manager in the history of The Apprentice EXCEPT Elizabeth. Could she go down as the worst project manager in Apprentice history?
