Belle, the daughter of Marlena and John Black, and Shawn, the son of Bo and Hope Brady, found their friendship transition into love back in high school. They may be young but they have certainly weathered their share of storms, including the machinations of Jan Spears and Belle's attraction to Shawn's best friend, Philip. Despite the obstacles, they have always found their way back together. After coming close to consummating their love on more than one occasion, Belle finally decided that she wanted to wait to make love to Shawn, who was more than supportive of her decision. As a symbol of her promise, she began wearing a purity ring.
Belle's best friend and roommate, Mimi Lockhart, is also involved in a complicated relationship. Mimi's boyfriend, Rex DiMera, arrived in Salem mysteriously with his twin, Cassie. It was eventually revealed that Rex and Cassie were the genetically engineered children of Marlena and Tony! But this was not the end of the story. Desperate to find out answers about himself, Rex performed a DNA test and learned that his and Cassie's father was not Tony DiMera, but in fact...Roman Brady! He also learned that their mother was none other than Roman's current girlfriend, Kate. Rex and Cassie kept this information a secret, but eventually Sami blurted out the truth to all involved. Right after the truth was revealed, Cassie found herself the next victim of the Salem Stalker. Rex was devastated by his sister's death. For a while, Shawn was convinced that his Rex was the serial killer. Since then, the two have made peace and embraced each other as family.
As the murders continued in Salem, Belle grew more and more upset about the danger around her. To keep Belle safe, John arranged for her to work for a designer in Italy. Back in Salem, Jan Spears secretly returned to town and began to stalk Shawn (despite her insistence to her therapist, Marlena, that she had moved on). When Belle returned to town, Jan continued to follow them around and became even more determined to split up the couple. Jan even enlisted the help of Nicole Walker Kiriakis in getting Shawn for herself.
