The Struggle of a Lifetime: Chloe, Brady, Craig, Nancy
For most of her teen years, "Ghoul Girl" Chloe Lane didn't have any attention from members of the opposite sex. But at a school dance, Chloe finally emerged from her shell and showed everyone how beautiful she was-on the inside and out. Wealthy, popular Philip Kiriakis was smitten. The two began dating and fell deeply in love. But when Philip let Chloe down, Chloe started spending time with brooding Brady Black. The two shared a love of music and soon connected as close friends. But while the two remained just friends, it was clear that both had deep feelings for one another.

As Chloe's senior year of high school progressed, Chloe was looking forward to graduating and studying music at Juilliard. But just as her future seemed its brightest, she received devastating news. Chloe had not been feeling well for months, but had been denying just how badly she felt to everyone around her. Finally Chloe's stepfather, Dr. Craig Wesley, received results on her blood tests. A stoic Craig broke the news to Chloe and Chloe's mother, Nancy-it was very likely that Chloe had leukemia. He gently told his stepdaughter that she needed more tests immediately.

After the tests, Chloe insisted on still attending her high school graduation and the Last Blast Dance. Nancy, consumed with worry for her daughter, felt Chloe should stay home and rest but Chloe finally made Nancy see how much these activities meant to her. As valedictorian, Chloe had the honor of delivering a speech to her fellow classmates. Chloe's life affirming speech had a big impact on her family and friends-especially Craig and Nancy, who knew what she was facing.

Eager to see Philip and Chloe back together, Chloe's friends arranged for both of them to attend the Last Blast. As they danced slowly together, Philip proclaimed his love for Chloe. But just as she was about to respond, Chloe passed out. Her friends rushed her to the hospital, where Craig and Nancy had just learned that Chloe did, indeed, have leukemia. As the kids waited for answers, Craig and Nancy told Belle, Shawn, Mimi, Philip, and Brady the news-Chloe had leukemia. The gang was devastated and vowed to help her through this crisis.

As Chloe battled the leukemia, Philip and Brady stayed by her side. Each provided comfort for her in ways only they could do. Brady helped Chloe by giving her music to lift her soul and by sitting quietly next to her while she fell asleep. Philip arranged for a tree to be placed in the hospital to remind Chloe of the special tree that they once carved their initials in. Throughout all of this, the two romantic rivals put their differences aside to focus on making sure Chloe pulled through her health crisis.

After Chloe's leukemia went into remission, she was released from the hospital. But her fight wasn't over yet. The only way to cure Chloe's leukemia was through a bone marrow donor. Everyone around Chloe had been tested, but no one was a match. Craig and Nancy knew the best chance of a match was a biological brother or sister. Nancy finally admitted to Craig the history of Chloe's conception. Chloe's father was a man named Dr. Sykes, and Chloe was conceived when the doctor raped Nancy. Nancy put her fears about her past aside in order to help Chloe. The two tried to track down Dr. Sykes but were unable to find him. Unwilling to give up, Craig and Nancy tried to get pregnant-a new brother or sister could be a match for Chloe! Craig and Nancy were thrilled when they learned she was pregnant. However, Nancy's pregnancy has been a complicated one and has put her life in danger. Despite the risks to her own health, Nancy refused to give up on the baby. She even signed a legal document preventing the doctors from taking the baby unless she was dead.

Meanwhile, Brady was determined to track down Dr. Sykes, who was in the Witness Protection Program. As Chloe and Philip prepared for a trip to New York, Brady learned Dr. Sykes' whereabouts. He told Chloe that he knew where her father was...and that he was going to find him. Chloe was shocked by this news, and decided to go with Brady on his journey. When Philip realized Chloe had stood him up, he tracked her and Brady down. Acting on jealous impulse, Philip wound up blowing Chloe and Brady's attempt to make contact with Dr. Sykes. In addition, Philip covertly arranged for Brady to be thrown in jail. When he finally got out, Chloe and Brady realized what Philip had done. Chloe was dismayed by Philip's behavior. Chloe told him, once and for all, that their relationship was over.

With her relationship with Philip behind her, Chloe and Brady continued to grow closer. At first, both were fearful of admitting their deep feelings. Eventually, they both declared how they felt and the couple made love for the first time.

Just as Chloe was moving forward with her life, Craig was delving into the past. He tracked down Dr. Sykes and learned that the doctor was not Chloe's biological father. A shocked Craig had tests done and learned that he was Chloe's biological father! After Nancy and Craig learned that both Nancy and the baby (a girl!) were going to be fine, Craig delivered the good news to Nancy. Later, the two told an overjoyed Chloe. Finally, Nancy gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. The proud parents gave Chloe the honor of naming her. Chloe appropriately named her baby sister Joy. After Joy was born, Chloe received the transplant she needed. She and Brady were thrilled to learn the transplant was a success. But Chloe was less than thrilled to learn that Brady would be going to work at Titan for his devious grandfather Victor.

Once Chloe entered remission after the transplant, she once again began to think of the future. It was a lifelong dream come true when Madame Marin offered Chloe a place singing with her European opera company. Brady tried to talk her into pursuing her dream and taking the gig. She was reluctant, but Philip (who had recently returned to town) saw the love between Brady and Chloe and persuaded Brady to go with her. Brady offered to be Chloe's manager while on tour in Europe and she reluctantly agreed. Unfortunately, Madame Marin insisted Chloe must go alone. Chloe decided to stay in Salem with Brady. However, Brady didn't want Chloe to miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime so he began to push her away. But Chloe insisted she wanted to stay in Salem with her family and Brady. However, soon Nancy and Craig informed Chloe that Craig had been offered a job in New York and that they would be moving there. This meant her family would no longer be in Salem-just Brady. Finally, Chloe decided to take the offer. With a final kiss and one last performance, Chloe left Salem-and Brady-behind.
