James Van Der Beek

James Van Der Beek / Dr. Joe Briggs

James Van Der Beek joins the NBC series "Mercy" as Dr. Briggs, the hospital's new cocky, womanizing and manipulative ICU chief. Van Der Beek is known to audiences around the world for his breakout role as the title character in the popular dramatic series "Dawson's Creek," and has starred in such features as "Varsity Blues" and "The Rules of Attraction."

Since being cast by Gus Van Sant as Matt Dillon's drug addicted cohort in "Drug Store Cowboy," Le Gros has become a long-time traveler on the independent film landscape. No stranger to the Sundance Film Festival, he has starred in such Grand Jury nominated films as Bart Freundlich's "Myth of Fingerprints" opposite Julianne Moore, Billy Morrissette's "Scotland, PA" opposite Maura Tierney, Greg Harrison's "November" opposite Courtney Cox, Stacy Cochran's "Drop Back Ten" and Peter McCarthy's "Floundering."

Born in Connecticut, Van Der Beek began pursuing his acting career in his teen years. He landed roles in the features "I Love You, I Love You Not" and "Harvest." Then he was cast as the central character Dawson Leary in "Dawson's Creek," which served as a breakout role for the actor. The series itself broke new ground in presenting teens and young adults on television as complex characters dealing with topical issues in a mature, articulate and forthright manner.

Le Gros' major Hollywood blockbuster film credits include David Fincher's "Zodiac," Tony Scott's "Enemy of the State," Oliver Stone's "Born on the 4th of July," Cameron Crowe's "Singles" and Kathryn Bigelow's "Point Break."

Among the other features Van Der Beek starred in while continuing to work on the series was the western drama "Texas Rangers." After his series ended its successful run, he also starred in the features "Standing Still," "Plague" and "Final Draft."

Van Der Beek has also guest starred in a two-episode appearance on "Criminal Minds," and in a three-episode story arc on "One Tree Hill," as well as single-episode guest-star appearances on such series as "Medium," "Ugly Betty" and "How I Met Your Mother." His vocal talents can be heard in episodes of the cult-favorite series "Robot Chicken." Further displaying his comedic talent, Van Der Beek was guest host for an episode of the iconic "Saturday Night Live."

Van Der Beek's many television movie credits include "Eye of the Beast," "Football Wives" and "Sex, Power, Love and Politics." Most recently he starred in the crime drama television movie "Taken In Broad Daylight" and in the sci-fi action thriller miniseries "The Storm."

On the feature film front, Van Der Beek has completed roles in the features "The Big Bang" opposite Antonio Banderas, where he plays the highest-paid movie star in the world who has a dark secret, and the independent film "Formosa Betrayed" where he plays an FBI agent with a conscience--the latter won him Best Actor at the San Diego Film Festival. Both films are slated for release later this year.
