Summer Mack is an all-American girl who wants to find true love and settle down. Her biggest fear is getting lost in the jungle; however, she is fiercely competitive and will do just about anything to win. An Olympic Trials finalist on the United States National Swimming Team, she developed her competitive nature early on. Her perfect first date is an adventurous day on a boat, followed by a nice meal prepared on the grill from her potential suitor. While Mack has a sweet side, she is serious about finding love outside of the Greater Orlando dating scene. Her biggest regret is not marrying her first love.
Mack attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is involved with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
Whom did you feel most connected to during the competition?
I seemed to float around a little in the beginning and was friends with pretty much everyone, but once Chase and I paired up, I knew we had a great connection and he ended up being the one person I really connected with.
Ultimately, are you happy the additional contestants were brought in to mix it up?
I can't say I was happy with the extra girls, but it was fair after we had such amazing guys to pick from in the beginning. The twists and turns never seemed to stop! Sometimes it was a little stressful to find your place in the mix when the dynamic was constantly changing. It did really test the strength of our relationships though.
What behavior surprised you the most from the other contestants?
I was a little turned off that some of the people there didn't seem to be participating for the right reasons or came into the show for exposure instead of really looking to meet a potential boyfriend/girlfriend. Luckily, the process weeded them out.
What was your favorite challenge and why?
My favorite was the conch shell/first adventure. It was so new and exciting and to go from meeting all of these new people to racing through the jungle in what seemed like a blink of the eye was super exciting and fun. It didn't hurt that we won that challenge. :-)
Was there anything off-screen that you feel the audience missed out on?
I think the cameras probably caught everything.
Any fun anecdotes or run-ins with nature you'd like to share? On the Upper Falls portion of one of the adventures, me/Chase and Ken/Yanina took these random donkeys in the middle of the jungle thinking they were a part of one of the clues only to find out we accidentally "borrowed" the donkeys and that they were not a part of the adventure. Ooops.
What did you learn about yourself through this experience?
I learned that finding someone who is as good of a person on the inside as they are on the outside is such an important quality that should be valued. I also learned that I am much less tolerant of douchebags than I used to be! Thank goodness. :-)
Why did you decide to take part in this show?
After watching the first season and seeing how well the process worked for several couples on the show, I felt it was a great way to meet someone I would really be compatible with. I liked the adventure part of the show; it seemed to truly measure whether you could work with your partner and how you handled stressful situations together. More real life than other dating shows.
Would you call yourself an outdoorsy person? Why or why not?
I am outdoorsy and adventurous! I would rather camp in the woods any day over staying in some stuffy hotel; being adventurous makes life less predictable and a little more exciting. Not much scares me and I could never see myself with a metro guy that has more "product" in the bathroom than I do.
What are you afraid of?
I am afraid of getting lost in the jungle... and of feeling like I let my guy down by not being a good partner.
What surprised you most about being in the jungle?
I never knew I had a serious allergy to hornets... specifically the nasty Dominican hornets. On the first adventure, I got stung during one of our treks and my foot was so swollen I didn't think I was going to make it through the Couple's Choice Ceremony. Ouch!!!
What was the hardest thing for you to live without? What did you miss the most?
I had a little trouble without my privacy while we were on the show. I never realized how much I value having some time during the day to just chill without all the chaos. I miss all the friends I met in the Dominican; it was weird after each ceremony when another guy and girl would leave, hard saying goodbye to new friends.
What would other people say are your best qualities?
I am outgoing, fun and a little feisty.
Describe the worst date you've ever been on.
A guy asked me out to a movie, showed up at my house and needed to take a shower at my place because he was running late and didn't have time to take one at his place!?! He proceeded to take me to the movies where he whipped out a flask and got wasted on Sprite and vodka (he tried to get me to drink it with him... I respectfully declined). I ended up having to drive his drunk ass home. Yikes!
What qualities do you find to be most important in your partner?
I look for a guy who is trustworthy, honest, witty, athletic and happy.
Describe your ideal date.
I like anything that involves being outside and active. I think going out on the water (boating, paddle boarding) is always fun followed by a delicious home cooked meal... maybe something on the grill. To me it's not about the money you spend on a date, it's about the effort put into making it fun and getting to know each other.
