As a lifeguard, surf instructor and water polo player, Mike Sweet hopes to swim laps around his competitors and dive into the hearts of the single women in the wild. He is no stranger to outdoor adventures, and his preferred first-date activity would be a breathtaking hike. An active outdoorsman, Sweet's goal of becoming a professional beach volleyball player keeps him active and always at the beach.
Sweet attended San Diego State where he was a member of the men's crew team and the ski/snowboarding team.
Whom did you feel most connected to during the competition?
Felt the best connection with Shauna.
Ultimately, are you happy the additional contestants were brought in to mix it up?
No. We were led to believe that we were part of a show with a set number of couples. Finding out that I was in the 2nd group of guys was a shock and a disappointment. That is not what I signed up for.
What behavior surprised you the most from the other contestants?
Some of the guys and girls didn't seem to find a connection right away, some never did. And yet, many of them stayed on the show and were able to get to know other contestants. I went with my gut and thought I had a connection. Turns out I was wrong and should have been playing the game instead. At least then I would have had a chance to get to know some of the other girls.
What was your favorite challenge and why?
You mean the only challenge I got to do? It was fun; I love being active and outdoors. My only regret is not being able to stay on longer and compete in more challenges.
Any fun anecdotes or run-ins with nature you'd like to share?
alm trees are sharp. Don't try to paddle a leaky boat. And if you have the option, stay away from snakes.
Why did you decide to take part in this show?
For the adventure and opportunity to travel. And of course to possibly meet someone awesome.
Would you call yourself an outdoorsy person? Why or why not?
I'm super outdoors. I mean I'm no Navy Seal but I love to be active and outside whenever I can. And I love to go hiking and camping whenever I find the time.
What are you afraid of?
Not much. I guess the biggest fear would be to die alone.
What surprised you most about being in the jungle?
Nothing really. I love the outdoors and the jungle was just as I expected it to be. Must be because I watch a lot of outdoor survival shows, haha.
What was the hardest thing for you to live without? What did you miss the most?
At first, it was my cell phone but then I realized how nice it was to be detached from reality. Next I missed fast food but that was also nice to be away from after a while. What did I miss the most? Probably my late night Oreos and milk habit. Much harder to go to sleep without that.
What would other people say are your best qualities?
Well I guess my height, athleticism and outgoing personality. But hey, what do "those" people know anyway right?
Describe the worst date you've ever been on.
Oh that's easy, any date where the girl and I have no connection and find it hard to carry on a conversation. And if she doesn't like to dance, or won't, it's totally over.
What qualities do you find to be most important in your partner?
Well after the obvious initial attraction, I would have to say sense of humor, a kind heart and some sort of flexibility both mental and physical. I can't stand narrow-minded or close-minded people.
Describe your ideal date.
Nearly anything outdoors would be fine for me. Or something where I can be myself which means acting like a big kid.
