Notes from a Producer's Assistant

Shaun here - the resident producer's assistant.

Write. Prep. Produce. Shoot. Edit. Air.

Week after week we here at SVU do these five tasks for each of our episodes. We can crank out an emotion-packed, 42-minute rollercoaster ride in just 15 workdays. Now imagine all that goes into creating one episode AND DOUBLE IT! It is tandem mayhem, folks. Pure tandem-onium! For the last two weeks, we have been working on two episodes simultaneously. That means double the writing, double the shooting and double the Danny Pino (mmm...)!

The seven days before we begin shooting a new episode we prep for all that is to come.  In just one week's time, we hold meetings for props, graphics, wardrobe, script, casting and locations. However, the best meeting of all is our cast read-through. This is a time when we gather all of our beloved detectives and read through the latest script. It is a chance for our actors (even some guest stars as well), producers and writers to discuss the ins and outs of the episode and delve into the heart of the show by reading the entire script out loud. Plus, sometimes I stand in for the victim of the week - Mom would be so proud!

Here are two snapshots of our last two:
