Fifteen Seconds of Fame

In the year and a half or so I've spent working as a Writer's Assistant on the show, I've gotten pretty comfortable being on set. Big time actors, directors, writers and producers? No sweat. I can investigate the craft services table and bring back egg salad sandwiches for just about anyone, but being on the other side of the camera is a different story.

In this week's episode, "Twenty-Five Acts," Fin and Munch head to the set of Raising Cain, a fictional political talk show hosted by witty playboy (and potentially very bad dude) Adam Cain. When the detectives arrive during a rehearsal, they find Cain handing out some harsh criticism to a couple of joke writers. But where would SVU find anyone to portray a couple of hardworking schmucks just trying to have their voices heard?

That's right, Raising Cain's writers are played by myself and the episode's actual writer, John P. Roche. Neither of us has trod the boards much in the past, but we're both pretty much naturals. The camera loved us. And we loved the camera. First, we were all, "Let's get these jokes into shape," and then we were like, "Hey, why are these cops talking to our boss?" Finally, we were all, "Hey, boss, don't worry about those cops. Check out these funny jokes." Look for us in the upcoming spin-off, "Underling Writers Who Look Around Kinda Confused and Curious." Each week, we solve a crime by looking up from the script we're editing for three seconds and seeing the crime happen. Right here on NBC!
