Gabriel Gray followed in his father's footsteps and became a watchmaker in Queens in the family business - but he longed to be special. Thanks to Gray's incredible skills at watch repair, Chandra Suresh, a geneticist researching "special people", thinks he has found someone with an extraordinary talent. Later, when Chandra discovers the talents Gabriel has are learnt and not natural, Gabriel becomes angry because he is not "special" and kills Chandra.
Gabriel starts to call himself Sylar (after a watch manufacturer), and a villain is born. He hunts down people with extraordinary talents (including our Heroes) in order to slice their heads open and steal their brains and powers.

After a lengthy killing spree, Sylar goes head-to-head with the Heroes. During all the commotion of the Petrelli brothers' heroics, Sylar escapes. He wakes up powerless and under guard by Candice, but soon escapes...
