Japanese has only five vowel sounds:
a •"ah" as in father
i •"ee" as in macaroni
u •"oo" as in zulu
e •"eh" as in get
o •"oh" as in organic
A familiar-looking word has a completely different pronunciation in Japanese. "Same," for instance, is pronounced "sah-meh" (and it means "shark"). When two of the same vowels appear next to each other in the sentences on the left, make the sound longer. To master the language, first learn the vowels!
