Shock and Awe

When you've been shot, shock sets in fast. I hadn't even hit the floor yet before I was trying to assure the fugitives that everything was okay, I'm fine, don't panic, stop screaming...

...but nothing came out of my mouth.

Now I lie on the floor, feeling the future leak out of me. I can barely sense the gunshot wound, but the blood trickling down my chest feels sharp and hot. Oh, my chest, I think dully, that's good: shot in the back, so bullet went right through.

Everything goes white.

I didn't expect how loud this would be.

Then I open my eyes and see everyone stumbling blindly. Flash-bang grenade. Has to be Janey Pierce. Clearing her lane of fire. Finishing the job she started.

Me.

• I have to convince her to stop...
• I have to sneak out as many fugitives as I can...
