For this episode, we really wanted to bridge the Grimm world to the historical. Drawing on mythology dating all the way back to ancient Greece and up through the Third Reich (all the while tying the whole thing in with the Grimm Brothers' own "The Master Thief"), we settled on the archetypal story of objects of power. In our case, three coins with a mysterious hold over their owner. We also delve into Nick's personal history as a character from his aunt's past suddenly appears. But when it comes to these three coins, you never know who you can trust.

In "Last Grimm Standing," we were looking to add a "Fight Club" element to the Grimm world. It allowed us to explore the darker, more violent side of the creature underbelly, delving even further into "black market entertainment." It also helped us dive into the mythology of our main character, with Nick being forced to realize his true capabilities as a Grimm.

We initially started with the notion of investigating fairy tales from different cultures and
stumbled upon a Japanese story called "The Goblin Spider." This story was fitting
because it featured spiders that had the ability to take human form. This got us thinking
about one of the most notorious spiders known to man, the black widow, which gave us
the ability to craft an intensely seductive creature. We upped the ante by introducing a
cursed aspect to the spider character, which allowed for a rich moral commentary to take
place.
