All About Bees
There are more than 20,000 species of wild bees. In beekeeping, or apiculture, bees live in large colonies of up to 100,000.
Collecting honey from wild bee colonies is one of the most ancient human activities and is still practiced by native societies in parts of A…
Some of the earliest evidence of gathering honey from wild colonies is from rock paintings dating to around 13,000 BCE.
The queen bee is the only sexually mature female in the hive, and all of the female worker bees and male drones are her offspring.
The queen may live for up to three years or more and may be capable of laying half a million eggs or more in her lifetime.
Almost all the bees in a hive are female worker bees. The life of a worker bee may be as short as six weeks.
Except for the queen bee, drones are the largest bees in the hive at almost twice the size of worker bees.
Drones do no work; their only function is to mate with the queen bee.
Worker bees will sometimes kill a queen unable to produce sufficient offspring.
