I think one problem with "going green" is that it's too easy to think, well what difference does my one cup a day make, or my using disposable packaging? After all I'm just one person, right, tossing just a few items? It's really hard to get a bigger picture on what consumption and waste means on a grand scale.
To get a good (and somewhat frightening) idea of the amount of stuff Americans consume on a daily basis, photographer Chris Jordan "ran the numbers" with actual objects used over various short periods of time. Definitely worth a long hard look: http://www.chrisjordan.com/current_set2.php?id=7
