Priscilla Barroso is one of 13 successful designers on NBC's reality competition series "Fashion Star."
Barroso is an Austin, Texas-based women's wear fashion designer for Crowned Bird, a French retro-inspired women's apparel collection. Barroso was born to immigrant parents and raised in the suburbs of Dallas. Although her parents were complete opposites in many ways, they both shared a love for fashion. As a child of a biracial, immigrant family, Barroso felt her diversity gave her not only a strong perspective in terms of originality, but also an empathic nature towards people. Many of her ideas and dreams are reminiscent of her family's struggles to adapt to a world unknown. At 15, Barroso left home to pursue her dreams and in turn severed ties with her father, to whom she did not speak with for nine years. In 2003, she moved to San Francisco to pursue a career in industrial design, but after realizing there was no program that was suitable to her needs, she chose to study fashion design at the Art Institute of San Francisco. She later transferred with a scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, where she graduated with a degree in fashion design in 2007.
While in school, Barroso became a freelance stylist for Levi Strauss & Co., went on to become a custom tailor in North Beach and worked as a partner in an organic and sustainable dog apparel line. Her valuable knowledge and experience in styling, fit and functionality came from working as a woman in a man's world. She has proudly tailored the best of San Francisco, with a range from indie musicians and artists to icons such as Carlos Santana. With the launch of Crowned Bird in June 2012, she has now taken on an entirely new passion for inspiring the world through colorful, versatile fashion that invokes timelessness with a focus on trending the best of styles. Her approach to designing is a constant reflection of her innermost desires and whimsical personality, which remain a huge part of her styling and inspirations.
Crowned Bird hit stores in September of this year and is currently sold at boutique retailers, including Etcetera, Etc. in Austin, Love and Glow in San Francisco, Shop Swoon in Canada, Dusty Buttons, Flasher, Old Hollywood in New York and Belys Style in Indiana. Crowned Bird is doing upcoming exclusives with online retailers Nasty Gal, Shop Ruche and Mod Cloth out of Los Angeles.Close X
