Daniel Silverstein is one of 13 successful designers on NBC's reality competition series "Fashion Star."

Silverstein, born in Reading, Pennsylvania, is a Brooklyn-based women's wear fashion designer. Silverstein has had the design bug since he was a young child. His family took notice of his talents and supported his dreams by providing him with sewing lessons and his very own full-scale sewing machine at the age of 12. In the eighth grade, Silverstein found an opportunity to put his new found skills and equipment to use. Prepared with a stack of sketches, a budget and a proposal, he approached his school to make the costumes for the upcoming musical. Silverstein ended up designing and creating 13 costumes for the play, on top of mastering the leading role. He continued making and designing costumes though high school and even received a Rising Star Student Achievement Award from the renowned Paper Mill Playhouse of New Jersey for his designs.

Silverstein began his formal fashion education at age 14 when he started taking Saturday Live courses at FIT. His talents were quickly noticed when the dean of the program began to encourage the school to advance his training. Although qualified in design, Silverstein was not eligible due to his age and lack of a high school diploma. In response, he loaded up on courses and was accepted early to FIT in 2006 at 16. Next for Silverstein was an internship with eveningwear designer Carmen Marc Valvo where he was able to participate in his first Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The following year, he completed the AAS program while interning with Republic Clothing group and licensee producer Swimwear Anywear Inc. that summer. To complete his third year of study, Silverstein relocated to Milan and finished his education at the famed Politecnico di Milano. Returning to New York, Silverstein landed an exclusive internship with Carolina Herrera and received his B.F.A. from FIT in 2010 with summa cum laude honors. After graduation, Silverstein began a freelance position at Victoria's Secret and shortly after created his eco-fashion label, 100% NY.  Silverstein is currently the creative director of 100% NY, which is an expression of "zero waste fashion" and "one-piece patternmaking." His main inspiration is the reduction of textile pollution, for which he created the "spine" detail, his signature technique for waste reduction. 100% NY is inspired by fossils, skeletons, ruins, various forms of nature and an interpretation of beauty in the unexpected. Silverstein also works for such companies as Victoria's Secret, Cool-Change, Schone Bridal and Brooklyn Girl as a freelance illustrator and designer.

Currently, Silverstein's label is sold at Stanley Korshak (Dallas), The Pure Thread (NYC), Catwalk (Washington D.C.), Chic Street (Shanghai), Bona Drag (online), Shop.100percentny.com, Gilt Groupe Japan and Shopbop.

When Silverstein is not designing, he enjoys biking, cooking, entertaining and pursuing his passion for Academy Awards trivia.
