Bret Young is one of 13 successful designers on NBC's reality competition series "Fashion Star."
Young, a Los Angeles-based women's wear and menswear fashion designer, was born and raised in Winchester, Ohio. Although he appreciates small-town life, he quickly realized two very important things - one, he wanted to get out of there and make something of himself and two, he was very different than the rest of the guys that he went to school with. He was always interested in fashion, but had to keep it a secret for fear of being made fun of.
For the past 10 years, Young has been a full-time fit model for some of the major design houses around Los Angeles, including James Perse, Guess, Joe's Jeans, Hudson, Marna Ro and Paige Denim. He has had no formal education, training or fancy degrees - just countless hours sitting in design rooms as a model, talking about clothes and fittings with well-established companies. Through fit modeling, he met some excellent designers and has always been asked about the fit and construction of the clothing, leading Young to become an expert when it came to drape, fit and function. After 10 years of working for over 70 different designers, patternmakers and sales reps, Young had the opportunity to see all sides of the business in-depth. He used all of this knowledge to develop his collection, titled Heirloom. Young describes Heirloom as a brand that will be timeless, priceless and incredibly well-fitting - he wants it to be a lifestyle and not just a line.
Currently, Young is separated from his wife of seven years and trying to adjust to being single again, all while being a dad, a designer and a full-time model.
