Hello pretty people! Happy Valentine's Day! So, I keep seeing this commercial that says, "Valentine's Day isn't about saying how much I love you, but about saying how much I love us." Very sweet, but I think the most important thing to say is "I love me!" before any of that. So, this Valentine's Day, let's practice loving yourself first!
And, naturally, that starts with... great hair!
First of all, you need a good haircut and color to achieve a great result with styling products and tools. When it comes to cutting your hair, EVERYONE needs to do it. Getting a haircut doesn't mean you have to sacrifice length if that is what you desire; it will just help give your hair shape and movement. I personally get a haircut every 2-3 months. You can ask your stylist to simply "shape" your hair without removing a lot of length. Or if you're bold enough to try a new haircut, find a picture in a magazine of someone's hair that you like and bring it to your stylist. But make sure you find a picture of someone with a similar face shape as yours. Not all faces can handle the same haircut. (I get my hair cut by Mark Turner at Salon True in Sherman Oaks, CA)

Moving on to color! I believe most people can benefit from some hair color. It just makes the hair vibrant, shiny, and gives it dimension.
I asked my hair colorist, Nelson Chan (Nelson J Salon in Beverly Hills), what he does to my hair. He uses AVEDA color and said he uses a dark brown base and dark cherry highlights on my hair. True brunettes should always have a bit of red. When my hair starts to lighten in the sun, he uses the dark brown base as "lowlights" on my hair as well. He adds a gloss afterward. Sounds easy, but I would only trust a pro to do it. I asked my hair stylist friend Patrick Killian, responsible for the gorgeous locks of Molly Burnett and Ari Zucker on Days, what he thinks makes a good blonde. He said, "The best blonde is your childhood color." If you weren't born with blonde hair, I'd let your colorist figure out what shades would flatter your skin tone. Same goes with redheads. (Patrick also works at the Matthew Ray Salon in Burbank.)
Now that you have a fabulous cut and color, you've gotta take care of that mane! That means investing in good hair products. But you don't have to spend a lot of money on products for them to be effective.
Let's start with shampoos and conditioners. I have a lot of hair and I've tried A LOT of shampoos and conditioners, and these continue to be my favorites: L'Oreal Nature's Therapy Mega Moisture Nurturing shampoo and conditioner. L'Oreal's whole line of Nature's Therapy is fantastic and very affordable (about $7 bucks a bottle). Smells great too! I also love Aquage hair products. I personally like the Smoothing shampoo and Healing conditioner. Very fine ingredients and at great prices. About $13.50 for a bottle. My absolute fave shampoos and conditioners are by Kerastase. They are definitely more of a splurge, but a little goes a long way. I love the Kerastase Nutritive Bain Satin shampoo and condtioner. Also love the Kerastase Reflection Bain Mirror shampoo and Chroma Riche Masque. Another favorite around the Days set is Moroccan Oil Moisture Repair shampoo and conditioner. It is sulfate free, which is important when caring for color-treated hair... gentle and doesn't strip away your color. Actually, all the Moroccan Oil products seem to be popular on set!
Now after you've washed that luscious hair, you need to apply a hair product, especially if you plan on blow drying your hair. Products help protect your hair from heat damage, UV rays, etc. Now, the brands I mentioned above also make great styling products, and you have to experiment, A LOT, to truly find out what agrees with your hair. I'm constantly searching for the next best thing, and right now, this is what makes me happy: After towel drying my hair, I apply KMS California Add Volume Root and Body Lift to my roots and then KMS California Add Volume Styling Foam to the rest of my hair. I like how light the products are and therefore don't weigh down my hair. But it depends on the look you are trying to achieve. If I want to flat iron my hair, I'll use KMS California Flat Out Hot Pressed spray for the ultimate straight hair with no frizz. I like their whole line of products, especially love the low price tag. Only about $12 bucks per product, and it lasts a REALLY long time. Just know that with the right styling products, it's a lot easier to achieve the look you're going for.
Well, kids, all this talk of hair makes me want to go wash mine! Hope you find something you like from my recommendations, and I'll talk to you next week! And if you have any beauty queries, please email me at NadiaBeautyBlog@gmail.com.
