Emmy Award-Winning Stylist on Nadia's Look

Hey kids! I'm back! So, after washing my hair last week, I asked my friend/Emmy Award-winning hairstylist on DAYS, Matthew Holman, how exactly he does my hair. So, he was kind enough to relay a step-by-step guide for those interested. Here goes!

"The key to Nadia's look," Matthew Holman says, "is to start with a good blow dry and use quality products; right now I am addicted to KMS California products! The foundation to the style is to shampoo with their 'addvolume' shampoo and conditioner. I then spray in addvolume Root and Body Lift at the scalp for support and styling foam on the mid-lengths and ends."

The tools you will need:
• Large boar bristle round brush for smoothing
• Large-barrel curling iron
• Styling comb to create sections
• Finger-wave clips
• Detailing brush

1. Divide your hair into three sections (left side, right side, middle) starting from the nape of the neck, and blow dry sections the same size as the round brush and allow to cool around the brush. This helps to hold the curl and add smoothness.

2. Work up the head section by section. On top of the head, create three sections: the crown, the top, and the bangs. Blow dry all sections back and allow to cool on the brush.

3. Repeat the same sectioning and curl each section on base with the large-barrel curling iron. Secure each section in place with one of the finger-wave clips. Allow to cool and spray some hairstay Maximum Hold Hair Spray onto the sections to help secure.

4. Once the hair is cooled, remove the clips and finger brush out the
sections and flip your hair upside down. Spray the hair spray through the hair with your hair flipped over to create volume.

5. Now, flip your hair back up and using the detailing brush, place the hair into shape fixing the look again with the Maximum Hold Spray.

Matthew's favorite product right now! - KMS California's flatout Anti-Humidity Spray. "It provides great humidity protection and a silky shine that doesn't weigh down styles. I spray this all over Nadia's style once it is in place!"

Thank you Matthew! Until next time, have a wonderful week and to ask me questions, please email me at NadiaBeautyBlog@gmail.com!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Hello pretty people! Happy Valentine's Day! So, I keep seeing this commercial that says, "Valentine's Day isn't about saying how much I love you, but about saying how much I love us." Very sweet, but I think the most important thing to say is "I love me!" before any of that. So, this Valentine's Day, let's practice loving yourself first!
And, naturally, that starts with... great hair!

First of all, you need a good haircut and color to achieve a great result with styling products and tools. When it comes to cutting your hair, EVERYONE needs to do it. Getting a haircut doesn't mean you have to sacrifice length if that is what you desire; it will just help give your hair shape and movement. I personally get a haircut every 2-3 months. You can ask your stylist to simply "shape" your hair without removing a lot of length. Or if you're bold enough to try a new haircut, find a picture in a magazine of someone's hair that you like and bring it to your stylist. But make sure you find a picture of someone with a similar face shape as yours. Not all faces can handle the same haircut. (I get my hair cut by Mark Turner at Salon True in Sherman Oaks, CA)

Moving on to color! I believe most people can benefit from some hair color. It just makes the hair vibrant, shiny, and gives it dimension.

I asked my hair colorist, Nelson Chan (Nelson J Salon in Beverly Hills), what he does to my hair. He uses AVEDA color and said he uses a dark brown base and dark cherry highlights on my hair. True brunettes should always have a bit of red. When my hair starts to lighten in the sun, he uses the dark brown base as "lowlights" on my hair as well. He adds a gloss afterward. Sounds easy, but I would only trust a pro to do it. I asked my hair stylist friend Patrick Killian, responsible for the gorgeous locks of Molly Burnett and Ari Zucker on Days, what he thinks makes a good blonde. He said, "The best blonde is your childhood color." If you weren't born with blonde hair, I'd let your colorist figure out what shades would flatter your skin tone. Same goes with redheads. (Patrick also works at the Matthew Ray Salon in Burbank.)

Now that you have a fabulous cut and color, you've gotta take care of that mane! That means investing in good hair products. But you don't have to spend a lot of money on products for them to be effective.

Let's start with shampoos and conditioners. I have a lot of hair and I've tried A LOT of shampoos and conditioners, and these continue to be my favorites: L'Oreal Nature's Therapy Mega Moisture Nurturing shampoo and conditioner. L'Oreal's whole line of Nature's Therapy is fantastic and very affordable (about $7 bucks a bottle). Smells great too! I also love Aquage hair products. I personally like the Smoothing shampoo and Healing conditioner. Very fine ingredients and at great prices. About $13.50 for a bottle. My absolute fave shampoos and conditioners are by Kerastase. They are definitely more of a splurge, but a little goes a long way. I love the Kerastase Nutritive Bain Satin shampoo and condtioner. Also love the Kerastase Reflection Bain Mirror shampoo and Chroma Riche Masque. Another favorite around the Days set is Moroccan Oil Moisture Repair shampoo and conditioner. It is sulfate free, which is important when caring for color-treated hair... gentle and doesn't strip away your color. Actually, all the Moroccan Oil products seem to be popular on set!

Now after you've washed that luscious hair, you need to apply a hair product, especially if you plan on blow drying your hair. Products help protect your hair from heat damage, UV rays, etc. Now, the brands I mentioned above also make great styling products, and you have to experiment, A LOT, to truly find out what agrees with your hair. I'm constantly searching for the next best thing, and right now, this is what makes me happy: After towel drying my hair, I apply KMS California Add Volume Root and Body Lift to my roots and then KMS California Add Volume Styling Foam to the rest of my hair. I like how light the products are and therefore don't weigh down my hair. But it depends on the look you are trying to achieve. If I want to flat iron my hair, I'll use KMS California Flat Out Hot Pressed spray for the ultimate straight hair with no frizz. I like their whole line of products, especially love the low price tag. Only about $12 bucks per product, and it lasts a REALLY long time. Just know that with the right styling products, it's a lot easier to achieve the look you're going for.

Well, kids, all this talk of hair makes me want to go wash mine! Hope you find something you like from my recommendations, and I'll talk to you next week! And if you have any beauty queries, please email me at NadiaBeautyBlog@gmail.com.

My Favorite Products

Like I promised, let's talk my favorite products!

In my real life, I love to use a lot of GloMinerals mineral makeup. It's easy and very clean and soothing to the skin. It also contains a natural sunscreen... who doesn't love that?! For my foundation, I like their pressed base foundation. It's essentially just a pressed powder compact. You use a big fluffy kabuki-like brush to lightly brush it on your skin. Super easy, not messy, and takes about a minute. You can't really mess up. It layers on very subtly and stays put ALL day!

They make liquid foundations as well, but I find it easier to just brush a powder onto my skin... I like their blushes as well, but I do have to say I always come back to using NARS blush. I have a couple favorite colors: Amour and Orgasm. Hmmm... fantastic, but I can't take credit for the names.

As for eye shadow, I still think MAC makes the best. Someone is welcome to prove me wrong. They have an insane palette of colors, and I'll ask Glen, my oh-so-charming and fabulous makeup artist at work, what he prefers to use on Chloe. A couple of my favorite colors will always be Cranberry, Sketch, and Charcoal... I also love MAC eye pencils. The pigments are really strong and last longer than I'd like sometimes! It stays with me through showers and soap! The power pencils are the best!

Here's a question I've gotten a lot: What type of mascara do you use? Well, I've tried a million different brands, and I keep going back to my Tarte mascara called Lights, Camera, Lashes! Love the name too... the brush is awesome, and the formula doesn't dry out quickly... a frustrating side effect of many mascaras. It's also almost all natural. You can find Tarte at Sephora. And no, I do NOT use fake lashes, though I'd encourage anyone to use them if they felt the need... I'll ask Glen to teach you.

Well, that's all for now, but remember to continue to send your questions to me at:

Thanks! XOXOXO

Fashion and Skin Care

Hello kids! First and foremost, I'd like to thank all you lovely (smart a**) people trying to challenge me with questions pertaining to nuclear physics or how to make a pizza from scratch... Ha ha... gave me some laughs. Okay, I'm just going to dive right into question and answering mode:

nadia_blue_180.jpg

Let's talk about fashion for a minute. A lot of you are inquiring as to where we get our clothes from on the show. That magic is masterminded by our costume designer Jayne Marie Kehoe, who has an insane ability to find really cute clothes, usually on SALE! We all like clothes on sale. She shops at most of the same places we all do:
Macy's, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom's. But she does find a lot of amazing clothes for a great deal at Loehmann's! You don't have to spend a lot of money to look good. Our clothes on the show prove that. Most of the dresses Chloe wears on the show are under a hundred bucks. The most important part is wearing something YOU like, and wearing it with confidence. :)

nadia_red_180.jpg

Now, on to skincare: This is tough because not everyone's skin will necessarily react the same way to the same product. All I can do is tell you what I like, and I can interview my beautiful castmates as to their preferences. Right now, I'm loving a skincare line called "Epicuren." A lot of spas carry the products, and I like them because they're pretty much all-natural and keep my skin problem-free, which is always a good thing. But I also really like some drugstore brands. I think Oil of Olay has always carried a really good variety of products for different skin types... so does L'Oreal. A lot of skincare products are trial and error. You usually have to try a few brands before you really love one. Also, I don't think there's anything wrong with mixing and matching different brands, as long as they don't contain the same ingredients, which could irritate your skin if used too much. For example, don't use several creams at the same time with acids in them, such as salicylic or glycolic, or your skin will hate you. I'll keep talking about this later... just breaking the ice...

So, I promise to do an in-depth interview and discussion with my hair and make-up guys at work to give you a play-by-play as to how they put me together in the morning. But in the meantime, come back next week when I'll talk a bit about how I do my own make-up... and what I like. PLEASE continue to send your questions to me at: NadiaBeautyBlog@gmail.com

Bringing Sexy Back to Vegas!

Viva Las Vegas! After a long weekend (okay, almost a full week!) filled with debauchery, dirty martinis, Cirque du Soleil, parties in the Elvis Suite, and sexy people bringing home Emmy statues, I've made it back in one piece to talk about what we all really care about on the red carpet: the fashion! I always love to see what everyone's wearing and what the trends are for the season. A huge trend I noticed was a lot of nude tones and metallic colors on the carpet. I guess when people think of Vegas, they think naked and glitter! Nothing wrong with that... I'm personally a fan of all the gold, silver and sparkles happening on the carpet. I absolutely loved the champagne and gold dress on Beth Chamberlin, and the silver dress that looked like it had been poured onto Kelley Menighan-Hensley.

nadia_120.jpg

There was also a major trend towards very short cocktail dresses, revealing a lot of skin... I'm guessing people wanted to cut right to the chase and get to the Vegas parties as quickly as possible without changing. A trend I LOVED on the carpet was the young girls dressing in old Hollywood glamour. Shelley Hennig looked gorgeous in vintage-looking Lloyd Klein, giant Glynneth B earrings, and a Christian Louboutin clutch. Very chic. Molly Burnett channeled Veronica Lake in a long black Tony Ward gown - chic and classy. Lexi Ainsworth looked dynamite as kind of a baby Audrey Hepburn, even though she's too young and pretty for all that make-up... and that's a compliment! And Emily O'Brien looked smashing, conjuring a flashback to young Elizabeth Taylor. Well done ladies! I have to give a special WOW to Gretta Monahan who was baby bump perfection in her poured-on Oscar de la Renta vintage gown. Hope I look that good when I'm preggo!

nadia-dress2_120.jpg

The men were looking hot, too. Some were unapologetically Vegas, but I'm gonna have to say I particularly LOVED Brandon Beemer, not only cause he's the hottest man on Earth, but because his J. Lindberg tux, Paul Smith shirt, and Giorgio Armani tie were perfection - and coincidentally, he matched me! I also thought Billy Miller, Scott Clifton, Jon Hensley, Michael Park and Zack Conroy were very dashing. Loved the three-piece suit Zach was wearing... very bold and beautiful. Wow, did I really just say that?! Ha ha!

To sum it up, the Daytime Emmys in Sin City certainly brought the sexy back...

Welcome to Nadia's Beauty Blog!

Welcome everyone to "Nadia's Beauty Blog." I'm so excited to be blogging for the first time! This is the perfect outlet for me to share my personal and trade secrets that I've come to learn over the years... this idea really started with the magical world of social networking known as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and also good old-fashioned snail mail. I've gotten lots of questions over the years from inquiring minds, like yours, about what the heck to do with everything from your hair to your skincare! You can ask me anything on here... well, not ANYTHING! ;) But, hopefully, I can give you some helpful advice on beauty and fashion and such. I won't be alone in doing this; obviously I owe most of what I know from the amazing people I work with every day. The DAYS hair, make-up and wardrobe team are the BEST! I'll also being asking my very hot coworkers for advice as well...

emmy_dress_240x320.jpg

With summer just around the corner and the Daytime Emmys only a couple weeks away, I guess I'll start there! I still need to pick out a dress, but I'm not going to stress out about it. First of all, I believe in wearing something that makes you feel good rather than trying to conform to some idea of a trend. I don't believe in following trends because we're not all built the same. Something has to be flattering to your body shape no matter what. You wouldn't catch me dead in harem pants or shoulder pads... though I'm sure they're lovely on someone else! I think you should feel great in a dress and not worry about what fashion has forecasted as the "in" colors of the season. Wear a color because it makes you smile. The only rule that applies is fabric. I wouldn't wear velvet, tweed or cashmere in the summer! Though, I doubt you'd want to... too darn hot outside!

Personally, I like to pick a dress for any special occasion at the last minute. Yes, I'm a major procrastinator, but I also don't think you should OVER think an outfit or dress. Usually your instincts are right, because if you feel comfortable wearing it, that's what's most important. Confidence is sexy... pulling on your dress cause you feel like it's too short, for example, is not. I also believe in trying on lots of styles. Never trust any garment on a hanger. I've found some of the most amazing clothes that look like nothing on a hanger. I initially didn't want to try on the dress that ended up becoming my pick for the Emmys last year! You might be surprised what is flattering on you and makes you feel good... well, that's it for now.

I'll keep you updated on my dress search, and only then will I know what shoes to wear, what kind of jewelry, handbag and etc. Then, what to do with my hair and make-up?! Stay tuned...
