An Interview with Robin Mattson

Some of you may think you recognize the actress playing Lee, another prisoner serving time alongside Hope, and you should! Robin Mattson has been actively working in daytime television for over 30 years since she starting out on "Guiding Light." Since then, she's played everything from sweet to downright nasty characters on "General Hospital," "Ryan's Hope," "Santa Barbara," "All My Children," "The Bold and the Beautiful," "As the World Turns," and now "Days of our Lives."

I had a chance to catch up with Robin and talk about her latest role on Days.

Days Insider: How has your time been so far on the set of Days?

Robin: Oh, it's been good. I mean, the process is kind of shocking. Things go so quickly and you hope you land something you want on the first take 99 percent of the time, and if you wish you did a little more of this or a little more of that, well... maybe next time! But, Kristian [Alfonso] and Gina [Gallego] are so great about rehearsing.

Days Insider: Are you working with any actors you've worked with before on other soaps?

Robin: Gina! Gina is wonderful, we have a similar way of working and it's a very compatible relationship. When you put that together with Kristian, it's great. They both love to run lines, so that's been great. When it comes to shooting the scene, you don't even have to think about your lines, you know them. It's all there.

Days Insider: Are you more of a fan of playing the bad girl character or the sweet girl character?

Robin: Well, I think they don't let me play nice anymore! The character I am playing now is pretty quirky and offbeat and she's seen it all and she's irritated. I put my own personal spin on my characters, but believe me, that doesn't mean I use personal experiences! Looking at my character, she has her own special point of view. She's certainly very personified. My husband is great at running lines with me at home and helping me explore this character.

Days Insider: Do you ever get tired of the orange jumpsuit every day?

Robin Mattson: Oh, I accepted that on day one. I was over it the first time I stepped into wardrobe. It's okay!

Days Insider: Do you have a favorite overall character that you've played?

Robin Mattson: I would have to say Gina on "Santa Barbara," particularly playing opposite Justin Deas, was probably as good of a time that you can have on daytime. Not as many people probably saw this character compared to Heather on "General Hospital" or Janet on "All My Children" but the bizarre things they let Justin and I do on the show and the fact that in my opinion he's so damn funny... I learned a lot about comedic timing that I didn't really get before. He was really interesting to work with and he gave a lot. Of course, also working with Kin Shriner was one of my all-time great memories on "General Hospital," when Scottie and Heather were wreaking havoc. Working with him is always a great time.

There you have it! My wonderful interview with the one and only Robin Mattson. Can't wait to see what twists and turns are in store for her character and for Hope in the near future! Keep watching, we are all in store for a great December!
