While being stalked by the Salem Strangler, Marlena met Detective Roman Brady, who became her bodyguard and then her beau. They married, but shortly after she delivered their twins, Sami and Eric, Roman was shot and presumed killed by Stefano DiMera. Stefano and other international criminals kidnapped Marlena more than once.
A stranger with amnesia appeared in Salem. At first, Marlena feared the man might be "the Phoenix" (Stefano DiMera). She soon found evidence, however, that he was Roman! It seemed that he had been kidnapped and held prisoner by Stefano.
Roman had been physically changed but still loved Marlena. She was delighted to have her husband home. It was a mixed blessing when the real Roman escaped his captivity and returned. By then, Marlena had fallen deeply in love with the stranger, who adopted the name John Black. Somehow, the three managed to sort out the confusion and become friends.
Marlena and John never stopped loving each other, but Marlena chose to stay with her husband and family, and John decided to leave Salem. Before he left, he and Marlena gave in to their passion and had a tryst that produced baby Belle. When Belle's paternity became known, Roman divorced Marlena and left town. By then, however, John was committed to Kristen Blake.
Stefano came back into Marlena's life. He began to drug her and take her for nightly excursions into his fantastic world of romantic delights. Unfortunately, the mental, emotional and spiritual disruption left her open to demonic possession. She caused havoc for friends and family before John - who discovered he had been ordained a priest - performed an exorcism and saved her. John sought and earned release from his priestly vows, but became embroiled in a jealous fight between Kristen and her husband, Tony DiMera. Knowing that he was dying, Tony staged his own death and made sure John would be arrested for murder.
While John was on death row, awaiting sentence for the murder that was really a suicide, he wrote Marlena a love letter. Before she could read the letter, however, Stefano kidnapped her yet again. This time, he kept her in a gilded cage in a strange mini-kingdom below the streets of Paris. John rescued her again, but now believed that she no longer loved him as she had never responded to his letter. Kristen told John that she was pregnant with their child. Marlena decided to keep secret her knowledge of Kristen's involvement with Stefano, for fear that she might miscarry. It took months for Marlena to discover the truth, that Kristen had miscarried and then used a look-alike to deceive everyone.
Marlena was about to tell John everything, when Kristen locked her in a secret room in the DiMera mansion. Kristen's plans began to unravel when the look-alike turned on her, and shut her in the secret room. This time, Marlena's good friend, Dr. Laura Horton, rescued her. The truth finally came out, and Marlena vowed her love for John. Just before they were finally to be married, however, Kristen returned to Salem with a man she claimed was the presumed-dead Roman Brady.
Roman was dying. Thanks to Kristen, however, he believed that Marlena had stopped loving John. Once cured, Roman found out the truth about Marlena and John's love. It soon became apparent that both men were determined to fight for her heart. Following Kristen's "murder," Marlena chose John. After a long and difficult engagement, the couple were wed and left for a romantic honeymoon in Hawaii.
When John and Marlena returned, his and Isabella's son Brady moved in. Marlena and Brady's relationship was tumultuous at best. She even believed him responsible for Belle's coma, when he was really trying to save his half-sister's life. After Tony's return to Salem, Marlena was involved with his treatment, as he tried to discover the reason for his fugue states. She also began treating the Gemini Twins and tried to learn where they came from. Eventually, she and John traveled to DiMera Island to try to learn more about the history of the twins. They discovered that she had given birth to Rex and Cassie and that Tony was their father!
The arrival in Salem of a serial killer caused much apparent dismay for the good doctor, as some of her closest friends were murdered. Eventually, of course, it was revealed that she was the Salem Stalker! She went to jail and was shot in what looked like an escape attempt. John carried her bloodied body to the church, where he laid her out on the altar until he was finally persuaded to let her go to the mortuary.
Of course, Marlena wasn't really dead. To her shock, she was living on an island version of Salem with all of her supposed victims. Eventually, other Salemites arrived on the island, trying to find their "dead" loved ones. Everyone banded together to escape, but Tony created a volcanic eruption, which eventually caused a giant wave. The Coast Guard arrived and managed to rescue some of them, but Marlena was not among the saved.
Marlena was again in Tony's clutches and he took her, Roman and others to a remote European castle where he held them captive. While in the castle, Tony tormented Roman and Marlena with video of John and Kate growing ever closer back in Salem. Eventually, believing John and Kate had made love, Roman and Marlena made love, as well.
Shortly thereafter, they escaped! Through fire and explosions, they made their way home! Roman and Marlena made the decision not to tell Kate and John that they had made love.
Marlena learned she was pregnant, and the father was Roman. Her doctor told her that she wouldn't likely carry the baby to term, so maybe the truth wouldn't have to come out. She did tell Roman, though. And everyone found out when John surprised her with a renewal of vows. She fainted and Roman shouted,"Be careful! She's pregnant!" John found out the truth and attacked Roman. In racing down the stairs to stop them, Marlena fell. She lost her baby, and when she found out, she lost her memory.
John hired Dr. Alex North to help Marlena. He had some pretty unorthodox methods. According to Dr. North, he was Marlena's first husband! He said that Marlena suffered from her first bout of hysterical amnesia after his "death" and forgot all about him. Marlena, with the help of hypnosis and drugs, fell for him. They renewed their vows and took off on an extended honeymoon.
The not-so-good Dr. North planned on eliminating Marlena. John tracked down the honeymooners and told Marlena what Dr. North was doing to her. At first, she couldn't believe it. After a pitched battle, John sent North plunging over a cliff and into the ocean below. After their return to Salem, John moved back into the penthouse, and he and Marlena were truly reunited.
John was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver, apparently the victim of the ongoing Brady-DiMera feud. The day after his funeral, Marlena and Sami argued about Sami's decision to marry EJ to end the feud. Marlena confessed to Hope that she had considered killing EJ as revenge for John's murder. When EJ was shot at his wedding to Sami, Marlena was a suspect and was arrested. Though it was revealed that she had gone to the church in disguise, it was determined she was not the shooter, and she was released.
EJ revealed he had seen "someone" in Stefano's basement lab. Marlena, Bo and Hope stormed the DiMera mansion and found John, alive! John was rescued, but his memories of his past had been erased by Dr. Rolf. He had also been programmed for a "mission."
In spite of his harsh attitude and violent outbursts, Marlena stood by "new" John as he recovered in the hospital. Meanwhile, Marlena exacted revenge on Stefano. As he lay asleep in his prison cell, she injected him with a chemical that would make him appear to be in a catatonic state - permanently!
Marlena accompanied John to Ireland to complete his mission. Bo, Hope, Shawn, Belle, Chloe and Philip, who had been tipped off that the kidnapped Claire and missing Brady might be found there, soon followed. The Salemites discovered the long-presumed-dead Colleen Brady was in fact alive!
Colleen, older sister of Shawn Sr., had an affair with Santo DiMera, father of Stefano. When she discovered Santo was married, she disappeared, an apparent suicide. In reality, Colleen had fled and given birth to Santo's baby and put him up for adoption. That baby was none other than John Black! Though Stefano had programmed John to kill Colleen, he was overwhelmed by his feelings and did not act. Colleen died shortly after, though not before being reunited with her long-lost brother, Shawn.
The Salemites left Ireland on John's private plane, but it crashed. The group was stranded. John and Marlena finally gave into the strong attraction between them. Marlena had hoped making love to John might bring back his memory, but she had no such luck. They were eventually rescued and returned home. Much to Marlena's shock, John decided take advantage of his DiMera birthright and claim his half-brother Stefano's estate as his own.
Marlena and Brady urged John to seek psychotherapy to attempt to regain his memories. Reluctantly, John agreed. Marlena sought help from her trusted mentor, but his beautiful, blonde daughter Dr. Charlotte Taylor arrived in his stead. John found himself drawn to Charlotte and accepted her help, yet Marlena remained skeptical of her newfound colleague. Marlena was shocked when John informed her that, after only one hypnotherapy session, Charlotte thought proceeding with them would be a waste of time and suggested he would never get his memories back. Brady obtained the recording of John's first hypnotherapy session, which showed he had started to remember! Charlotte confronted Marlena, pulling out a hypodermic needle filled with a dose of muscle relaxant large enough to kill her. John arrived just in time to save Marlena, but got the hypodermic in her place. He was rushed to the hospital. Kayla encouraged Marlena to talk about the past with John. She did just that and even kissed him. He awoke and uttered the words, "I remember; I remember all of it, Doc, especially you."
Marlena was overjoyed, but, unfortunately, John was paralyzed from the neck down. After an intimate wedding at his bedside, John and Marlena left Salem for his treatment.
In September of 2011, John and Marlena returned to Salem as special guests at the opening of the Horton Town Square. John was able to walk again; unfortunately, he was arrested for embezzling millions of dollars in retirement money and pensions from Basic Black. John and Marlena hired Carrie to be John's defense lawyer, while EJ hit John with a civil suit. Marlena believed John was being set up.
John was put under house arrest after being severely beaten up in jail. When Johnny went missing after a farewell get-together for John, he decided to plead guilty of all charges in order to protect his family. John was sentenced to fifty years in prison with no chance of parole. Marlena was devastated. Carrie and Rafe eventually uncovered evidence that John was set up. They took the new evidence to the judge, who released John just in time for Christmas.
Bo and Hope were investigating a secret safe deposit box that Alice had. The box contained two secrets. The Horton secret was that John and Hope were still legally married from the days when Stefano had brainwashed them! John and Hope headed to Alamainia to try to get a divorce, but Stefano intervened, turning them briefly back into Princess Gina and the Pawn. Stefano taunted John with surveillance photos of Marlena. Finally, John and Hope made it back to Salem.
Marlena accepted a job at Salem U. as head of their psychiatry department. Marlena was also getting closer to her grandson, Will. She offered him guidance as he came to terms with his homosexuality, and she also acted as a mediator between Sami and Carrie.
