Berris first gained attention as Nick on "Days of our Lives" and earned an Emmy nomination in 2009. After briefly leaving the show, Berris quickly lined up strong roles in a series of high-profile independent films, including "Minkow" opposite James Caan and Ving Rhames, the crime drama "Mafiosa," and "Girlfriend" by director Justin Lerner, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Upcoming feature film credits include a role in the gritty indie drama "Meth Head," where he starred opposite Lukas Haas and Tom Sizemore as a young man coping with an addiction to crystal meth, as well as in the fantasy-thriller "House of Last Things," which was recently selected as one of four US Films in Progress to screen at the Champs Elysees Film Festival in Paris and is expected to premiere in the U.S. later this year. His television credits include roles on "Breaking Bad," "Prime Suspect" and "The Big Bang Theory."
Nick quickly developed a crush on Chelsea Benson, but was too shy to tell her. Instead, he sent her romantic email messages using the fake identity "Lonely Splicer." Chelsea was smitten with her secret admirer, and an online relationship developed. Meanwhile, Nick became convinced that Chelsea would never love him for himself. He went to her home to tell her the truth and instead found a drunk Billie, upset that Steve was going back to Kayla. They commiserated about their love lives and ended up making love.
Chelsea was upset when she eventually found out that Nick was the Lonely Splicer, but forgave his deception and the two grew closer. However, Chelsea soon also discovered that Nick had slept with her mother and was heartbroken. Max went to France in search of his half-sister, while Nick saw a video blog of Melanie Layton and realized that she was Max's sister. He followed Max to France and found Melanie. He pretended to be rich, and the two seemed to hit it off and formed a connection. They met up with Max and Stephanie.
After Melanie agreed to a have a drink with Claude, someone whom her father Trent owed a gambling debt to, Nick rescued her from nearly being raped by the creep and got shot in the process. Nick convinced Melanie to return to the States and start a new life. When Trent was murdered, Nick was among the list of suspects. Nick soon got a DUI and bemoaned to Maggie how he still had feelings for Chelsea.
Later, it was revealed that Nick had killed Trent, who was Melanie and Max's biological father. He found Trent and Melanie having a heated argument in the cemetery. After Trent threw Melanie down and she hit her head on a gravestone, Nick stabbed Trent in the back. He had become addicted to painkillers after being shot in France, which made him act strangely. Maggie found Nick's painkillers and noticed his bizarre, agitated behavior and recalled how Jessica, Nick's mother, developed a split personality after she became addicted to painkillers. He became obsessed with Melanie, wanting to make her feel as though she needed him. He made taunting phone calls to Melanie and even sent her a note which said, "I saw you at the cemetery. I know what you did."
After everyone else turned away from Melanie, Nick stood by her and convinced her to move into Maggie's house with him. Melanie soon discovered the same type of stationary at Maggie's house which her stalker used. Melanie confronted Nick, and he confessed that he was the one terrorizing her, insisting that he cared about her and wanted to protect her. He convinced her that she was the one who killed Trent. Nick convinced Melanie to leave town, and they ended up at the airport motel.
Melanie became uncomfortable with his increasingly aggressive behavior, not wanting to let her out of his sight. After Nick stabbed some ice with an ice pick, Melanie flashed back to the night of Trent's murder and realized that Nick was the one who killed Trent. She confronted him and a struggle ensued on the balcony. Philip and Bo were able to pull Melanie up to safety, while Hope arrested Nick for Trent's murder.
Nick signed over the rights of his alternative fuel project to Melanie. During his sentencing, Maggie and Melanie both gave heartfelt testimonies on his behalf. As a result, Nick received a sentencing of two to five years, although with good behavior Nick would be eligible for parole in 18 months. Nick thanked Melanie for her testimony and asked Max and Chelsea to keep his project out of the wrong hands. He also shared one last emotional goodbye with his first love, Chelsea.
Nick was released on parole and returned to Salem a changed man, much to Melanie's fear. But Melanie and Nick mended their past before she left Salem to be with her mother in Europe. Nick now works at the Brady Pub and reassimilates himself to Salem with the help of Gabi, his new love interest.
