Aziz Ansari can draw upon plenty of inspiration to play a suck-up.
The Bennettsville, S.C., native stars as sycophantic bureaucrat Tom Haverford in the new NBC comedy "Parks and Recreation" (tonight at 8:30 on WHDH, Ch. 7).
"I was in the business school at NYU," Ansari said in an interview from the Universal Hilton in Los Angeles. "So I totally saw people like Tom all the time. People who would go into a room and say hi to the three important people in the room. Tom is very much like a guy who is always reading Dale Carnegie's 'How to Win Friends and Influence People.' He's always trying to schmooze with people. He sees this job as a steppingstone."
