JAMAWN J. WOODS - Winner

America's Next Great Restaurant
  • Age: 32
  • Detroit, Michigan
  • Self-Employed Caterer/Cook
  • Restaurant Concept: W3's

Jamawn J. Woods discovered his love for cooking at age 15 when he helped his father make homemade candy. There were not many opportunities for a self-taught chef without any formal training growing up in Detroit, so Woods created a catering company out of his home. Woods currently owns a small catering business and a food delivery service called Cook with the Looks Catering, W3's, Woods, and Wings and Waffles. His business exemplifies his focus, dedication and drive to be a successful chef. W3's is the acronym for Woods' Wings and Waffles, which consists of Belgian waffles and chicken wings. The waffles come in a variety of flavors, and the chicken has a special seasoning that's added after it's been fried. Woods is a budding restaurateur who would love the opportunity to show the world that small beginnings make for even greater and bigger endings.

  • Exit Interview:

What inspired your fast casual restaurant concept?

My passion to own my own business and to provide for my family inspired my concept, which is why I started selling wings and waffles out of my house.

What was it like to make it to the Top 10 and compete on the show?

It was truly a blessing and has been added to the list of milestones in my life.

What moment or moments on the show were most surprising to you?

Three moments were surprising to me. The first would be when I was picked as a cast member for the show, and the second would be when Eric was kicked off the show. Finally, when the show flew my family out, it was priceless and so unexpected.

What was the best part of your experience? Did it change you?

The best part of my experience was the whole Vegas trip, staying at Caesars, meeting the judges, eating at Mesa Grill, and the competition. No, I don't think the experience has changed me. I'm still the same person, just with more drive, passion toward food, and self-confidence to succeed.

Did you make any lasting friendships and/or business relationships on the show? With whom?

Yes. I feel the friendships I established with the final contestants on the show with Joey (Brooklyn Meatball Co.), Suds (Spice Coast), and Stephanie (Harvest Sol) will be lasting bonds.

Which one of your competitors' restaurants would you eat at regularly?

I would have to say the Saints & Sinners restaurant was pretty good. I enjoy quick, on-the-go food.

What have you been doing since being on the show?

I have been working, cooking, catering and spending time with my family.

What has the experience of being on the show taught you?

The experience of being on the show has taught me that one small idea or concept can turn out to be a grand plan depending on who's looking at it.
