United or Divided?
Four minutes before show time on America’s Got Talent ‘Results Night’ and 40 People crowded in to the Green Room. Divided into 12 acts, we knew only 4 acts would win, 8 would go home. All the contestants were pensive or giggling or making jokes and exhibiting a little nervousness. What puzzled me was that really, as competitors for a magnanimous grand prize, I expected them to be suspicious, calculating and scheming about how to win. Isn’t that what reality shows are all about? But as I looked around, I thought about the past week and how many of us had become friends. Each group heading for the stage and possibly being sent home was hugged and applauded as they left. How did that happen? I came to a simple conclusion; that what united us was much greater than what divided us. Although we were different in our talents, ages, backgrounds, ethnicity, culture and even the way we looked at life, what united us was the hard work we had invested, the joys, fears and hopes we held in our hearts and the common experience of facing judges and an audience that might not be kind. The outcome was not guaranteed. Life is very much like that. Would it be so hard to imagine a world where we were respected and appreciated by those who oppose us. Where we were applauded by those who were very different than we are? It is true, and I believe it now more now than ever. What unites us as humans is MUCH greater than what divides us. It is as easy as treating others the way we would like them to treat us.
