Exclusive Online Interview with show photographer Chris Haston Previous - Chris Haston Page 5Next
"Will & Grace" is a very low-light show. Tony Askins is our director of photography. He had real reservations about using a lot of light, because when the show goes out on the world there's guy in a booth with his hand on a knob who can adjust the levels. So Tony shot the show in such a way that you can't adjust it too much. The newest digital camera I have allows me to shoot in low light, so the pictures have done nothing but improve. By the time the finale came around, the pictures were amazing.
My camera is also in soundproof housing called a blimp. They use them in courtrooms, on golf courses and on set, because even though it's a digital camera it still has a shutter that makes a noise.
Your images are featured online in our Will & Grace wardrobe section and in the photos area. Have they been featured in any of the companion books that have come out?
There were two humongous images that hung in the back of the "Will & Grace" audience. That was impressive enough to me. I'm my worst critic. Whenever anyone asked, "What do you do?' I could point to the back of the stage, at the 12-foot by 12-foot images and say, "See those? I shot those.'
There was a book that came out with hundreds of my images in it. In fact, there were only two images in the book that I DIDN'T shoot. And I didn't get photo credit, which I think was a slip-up. It's nice for me to be able to look at that book and think back to the thousands of hours I spent on set.
What will you take away from this experience?
Knowing that I was part of a well-oiled machine that made people laugh will always stand out for me. Being a part of one of the last shows shot on film. The camaraderie with the crew and cast. I'm taking away a lot of friendships. In this business it's hard to make and keep friends. These are the kind of friendships that if I run into someone in six months or a year it'll be seamless. It'll be like no time has passed. With this show, there were so many inside jokes and great laughs that you can look over at someone and say one thing and they'll totally get it.
I'm sure this is too much information for the general public, but one thing that was saddest on the show was that I had a lot of turmoil in the past eight years in my personal life. "Will & Grace" was where I went for peace of mind. It sounds odd because it's a TV show, but that was my escape. That was my beach with a rum drink in my hand. Nothing else mattered when I was there.
My heart is over-filled right now with this show. One of the gifts they gave us was a signed script cover from the finale, which is now hanging in my house. Every time I pass it, I'll give a nod of the head to Will, Grace, Karen and Jack - and Max, Jimmy and Dave. What an amazing eight years, I wouldn't trade one second.
