Do you remember your first impression of the show/cast?
I've worked on a lot of hit shows. Initially when you work on as many pilots as I do, it's like oh here's just another show. The fact that [Emmy award winning director] Jim Burrows was involved made me know it was something special.
I went on as a new crew member - so I was only there show night. I didn't know the crew that well. I stuck by Jimmy since I'd worked with him on "Cheers" and a bunch of other stuff. Then I met [Executive Producers/Creators] Max Mutchnick & David Kohan. They were such a well-oiled machine and Max is so hyper! He's an amazing guy. He warmed up to me quickly. One of the first times I met him he asked me to shoot something for him personally, and I did and got it to him quickly. Next thing I knew he was telling me I'd be there every day. From then on, I was at every show.
As far as the cast, I'll be honest; I don't pay that much attention to the cast [when I'm shooting a pilot]. I'm just concerned about my pictures. Often times I don't recognize great acting until it slaps me upside the face. I knew right away that Megan and Sean had mad chemistry. Then, when we had our first big scene between "Will" and "Grace" I knew that we were right on the money.
The thing about Burrows is the actors don't have marks [on the stage floor]. He just tells them to find their light and find their lens. Which means, the actors have to know where their camera is and they have to hit their mark instinctively. Most sitcoms have actors looking down as they approach their marks. On Will & Grace, they approach more naturally.
Did Jimmy do that on "Cheers" too?
Yeah, that's Jimmy's style. I complemented him the other night at the finale taping. I said, "Sh*t runs downhill and with this show, there's no sh*t at the bottom of the hill." This show ran smoothly and was such a well-produced product, that guys like me - who are "below the line" - got to do our jobs and do it well. Nobody bothered us and it was very rewarding to look back on eight years.
