Alex Herschlag has been with “Will & Grace” since its first season and has won an Emmy Award, a Shine Award, and has been nominated for three Golden Globes for his work on the series.
Herschlag was born in the Bronx and at 6 relocated to Spring Valley, New York, which is known far and wide for being Exit 14 on the through-way. He attended McGill University in Montreal, Quebec where he majored in psychology.
Herschlag began performing stand-up comedy in Montreal and continued doing so when he moved to San Francisco after graduating college. He also studied improvisational theater and wrote and performed for various sketch comedy groups, including the official comedy troupe of the San Francisco Asian American Theater Company (where he was the “token” Caucasian).
Herschlag moved to Los Angeles after taking part in AFI’s Television Writer’s Workshop. While there, he wrote and performed with a sketch comedy group featuring Molly Shannon (NBC’s “Saturday Night Live”). He barely supported himself writing for the CBS Radio Comedy Network -- and suffered a “grave disappointment” when he wasn’t hired to be a writer for the “Mickey Mouse Club.”
In addition, Herschlag has written material with and for various standup comics, most importantly Ellen DeGeneres. Their relationship led DeGeneres to bring Alex on as a writer on her sitcom “Ellen,” for three years.
Herschlag received a Peabody Award on “Ellen” for his work on the “coming out” episode. He also wrote for the national Emmy Award show, the Grammys and VH1 Honors, and was a guest writer for NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” He also wrote and performed with television’s Vance DeGeneres in “The Fourth Floor Show,” a parody talk show that aired on the E! network.
Herschlag currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife, Apryl Huntzinger, who is also a writer, (“And a better one at that!”).
