Martin Sheen as President Josiah Bartlet |
 |
Emmy Award winner Martin Sheen returns to NBC’s “The West Wing” this year in the powerful role of President Bartlet. He was Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated for his portrayal of the president in 2003. Sheen’s “West Wing” performance earned him Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for four seasons prior to that.
Sheen has amassed an impressive body of work over the course of his esteemed career. Probably best known for his charismatic performance as Captain Willard opposite Marlon Brando in the classic film “Apocalypse Now,” Sheen initially chose an acting career -- against the wishes of his father, who wanted his son to pursue an education at the University of Dayton. (He was born and raised in the Ohio city.)
Sheen launched his career as the lead in the Broadway play “The Subject Was Roses,” and went on to receive a Golden Globe nomination for his leading role in the film adaptation.
Sheen’s additional film credits include “Wall Street” (in which he co-starred with his son, Charlie Sheen), “Heart of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse,” “Da,” and “Badlands” (opposite Sissy Spacek). In 2002, he also appeared in Steven Spielberg’s “Catch Me If You Can.”
In addition, Sheen also received Golden Globe nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture for the 1983 miniseries “Kennedy,” for Best Actor for the miniseries “Blind Ambition,” and for his work on “The West Wing.” He has also received Emmy nominations for his roles in the TV movies “The Execution of Private Slovik” and “That Certain Summer.” He won his Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series on “Murphy Brown.”
Sheen was named Favorite Actor in a New Series at the TV Guide Awards and the Viewers for Quality Television also nominated him earlier for Best Actor in a New Series.
Sheen and his wife, Janet, reside in Los Angeles. His birth date is August 3.
