Marvin 'Smitty' Smith as Drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith became a “Tonight Show” band member on January 30, 1995. He is originally from Waukegan, Illinois, and before moving to Los Angeles, lived in New York City for 14 years. He has recorded some 200 albums with various artists, as well as two solo albums. In addition, he also has toured with Sting, Sonny Rollins and Willie Nelson.
