ASK ANGELA

November 20, 2008 10:45 AM

From kharma88: Since you are the total opposite of your character, is there anyone in the cast who is the same as their character? Example: Is Paul quiet like Toby? Is Jenna an artist like Pam?

Paul is quiet like Toby, and Jenna is actually a great cartoonist! She can draw very well. I hope to own one of her cartoon drawings one day! Rainn is very much like Dwight, Ed is nothing like Andy. Brian is nothing like Kevin, although they both like beer. And Kelly is Mindy, and Phyllis is Phyllis!

From Marivic: I read that Jenna's Isabel's godmother. Aww... Do you remember your and Jenna's first meeting? Did you know then that she was going to be your BFF?

Our first season was six episodes. I remember walking through the parking lot. It was late at night, and we were doing a night shoot. Jenna and I were walking arm in arm, doing our version of Laverne and Shirley, doing the "schlemiel, schlamazel..." and laughing. Steve Carell was walking past us, and he pointed at us and said "No matter what happens [with the show], you have this. You got this friendship out of it and that's an amazing thing."

From rxygrlbbygrl: My husband and I are going as Dwight and Angela for Halloween...got any suggestions on what to wear to make me stand out as Angela?!
If you have any kind of Victorian shirt that has as least 30 buttons and goes up to your chin...also what might help is a cat hair clip, cat buttons, cat earrings. If you own a pair or nursing shoes with a high heel, and any kind of severe ponytail ;)

From Louise: I was wondering if you have any say in how you dress at all or does wardrobe and stylists do it all?
From aflove: What has been your favorite outfit to wear? In which episode? I know you wear a lot of frills and buttons...but you've got some really cute pieces!

Our wardrobe department really does a great job with my character. Although here's a interesting little bit of trivia: I wore my own clothes in the pilot! I wore what I wore to my audition: grey pants, some clunky three-seasons-ago black shoes, a grey turtleneck with a grey sweater. I wore my hair in a low ponytail with hardly any makeup, which I think helped inform the wardrobe department cause our producers really liked the look :)

And aflove, I'll tell you my favorite from this season: you haven't seen this episode yet, but I call it the Janet Jackson shirt, cause it looks like it could have been worn in "Rhythm Nation." Stay tuned!

NEW! SUBMIT YOUR VIDEO QUESTION FOR ANGELA Angela is now taking video questions for her new Q&A segment. Watch the first installment here and then click here to upload your video to the Adventures with Angela myNBC group. Who knows, Angela may answer your question on camera! From Grey: Did you know any cast members before the show started? I knew Kate, Oscar and Dave Koechner (Todd Packer). We all studied and performed improv at iowest for years. None of us knew the other had been cast and it was such a fun surprise the first day we were all on set. From Hannah: If you were stranded on an island, and could bring three things. What would you bring? Brad Pitt, Brad Pitt, Brad Pitt. Hahaha. Just kidding. Little bit of sleep deprived humour there. :/ Btw, I am SO bad at these list type of games. I can never make up my mind and I always ask too many questions and usually drive the person who asked me crazy. For example can the thing be a person? Is there electricity on this island? Are food and shelter a given? Could Isabel come and visit? See....annoying right? Having said that....ummm my ipod, chocolate chip muffins (my latest craving), a book (right now I'm reading Eat, Pray, Love).

From Everyone: Who won the baby pool?
Kate Flannery won the baby pool!

From Tessa: How did they hide your pregnancy while filming the last episodes this past season?
They hid it any where and any how they could. File cabinets, a big black purse, photo copier machine, Brian's arm, but my favorite was in the Dinner Party when we hid it with that huge flower bouquet. :)

From: Melissa: How are you adjusting to having a baby and working on more episodes of "The Office"? How is it working for you?
Oh my goodness Melissa! It was hard at first. Leaving that cute little peanut is tough. I love the mornings with her. She is always smiling and cooing and so playful. Once I get to work I find myself looking at the clock waiting for lunch to come around. Isabel visits at lunch! It is the highlight of my day. Don't get me wrong I love my job but I sure do miss my little gal. There are lots of conflicting feelings going on that I'm sure all working parents can relate to.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!
Angela Kinsey happily announces the arrival of daughter Isabel Ruby, born May 3, 2008 at 12:50 PM and weighing 6 lbs., 14 oz. Mom and baby are doing great! Thank you to all the fans for your warm wishes!

From Stephanie: Have you ever had a "real life" job with a boss like Michael?
Oh yes Stephanie. I worked at a restaurant once where the manager was a total Michael Scott. He would come up with useless meetings and he wanted desperately to be everybody's best friend. I was the hostess and he loved saying to me, "Angela, are we in a 'menu presenting' mood today?"

From Natalie: In the show, it's always mentioned how petite Angela is. How do you maintain your healthy, petite figure in real life ? :)
Well, I come from tiny people. I take after my Grandmother Lena and she is a little thing. I have always been athletic. Lots of tennis and hiking etc. I love being outdoors. And I've always eaten like a bird. Lots and lots of little meals and snacks. It's never any conscious choice I made but more of just how I'm wired. And before getting pregnant I never really had a sweet tooth. My whole life I haven't liked sweets. I don't know why. I think that has really helped me. I have no idea why (maybe hormones?) but now that I'm preggers I LOVE sweets! So we'll see how I do after the baby! :)

From Ashley: Has it been totally crazy being pregnant on the set? I am due May 11th and going through the day to day is interesting enough, I can't imagine being on a set for hours! By the way, you look great!
Hey Ashley. Okay thanks for saying I look great because as you know we are in the home stretch and I feel so huge! Being pregnant on set is definitely a new experience. One of the perks is that we have amazing caterers and craft service so I am getting excellent meals and snacks (way better than when I'm home!). Getting my microphone on is very tricky. They have to strap it on my leg a lot because my big belly gets in the way! On the down side we do work very long hours and I do feel more tired. But the producers are trying to make sure my scenes get shot first. And I love my job and who I work with so much that it makes everything else okay.

From Colleen: I'm getting married next June. What advice would Angela give to a bride to be? BTW, the wedding is in Scranton! :)
Angela Martin's advice for the bride to be....."Watch any footage you can of Phyllis' wedding and do the exact opposite. Oh and try not to be whorish on your wedding day. It's tacky."

From Jo: After four years, do you still watch the episodes when they air?
Almost always. I am a dork for our show. I love it! I may not be able to watch it each week once the baby gets here but we have it season passed on our TiVo!

From Mark: What do you and the rest of the cast do to pass time between scenes?
Well, we shoot very quickly. Because they want the documentary feel, we do not do big elaborate lighting setups. We might only have 5-10 minutes between shots. So in that time we'll grab a snack, go 10-1 (set lingo for a potty break), return a phone call, etc. Occasionally we get bigger breaks and Jenna and I will hang out. Brian and John usually have a Madden football game going. Oscar will get a crowd to gather around his computer. He loves watching karate and all kinds of sports stuff on his computer. You can always hear the guys ooohing and aaahing over some crazy thing he is watching. A lot of times we are all gathered around the craft service table grazing on snacks and catching up with each other. We have a very casual energy on our set. I think we are very fortunate.

From Justine: What's your favorite thing about Dwight and Angela? or Angela and Andy?
Hmm, well I love so many things about these relationships. They have really opened up a new side of my character. Like Dwight and Angela's forbidden love. They think they are so secretive. It's a lot of fun to play those scenes. In my mind, they are oddly perfect for each other. And I love how hard Andy is trying to woo Angela. Bless his heart, that cannot be easy!

From Lisa/Melanie: How did it come about that you and your character have the same name? Was that a coincidence, or was it decided deliberately after you were cast?

Oscar, Phyllis, Creed and I were new characters for the U.S. series and for whatever reason the writers decided to use our real names. It's pretty hilarious on set because it still confuses us. Oscar especially! ;) He'll call Jenna Pam when we aren't rolling and call her Jenna while we are rolling. It cracks me up every time.

From Caleb: What was the hardest scene you had to play on The Office?

My hardest scene was with Jenna in a coffee shop. Dwight had driven to the corporate offices for Angela Martin to turn in the tax forms she forgot to send. It was such a romantic gesture and he saved her job doing so. She was overcome with happiness. In the script it said that as she retold it all to Pam that she was giddy. I thought...giddy?! How the heck is Angela Martin giddy? She even had to smile and giggle. I struggled with that because I wanted it to feel authentic to her character. This woman is rarely giddy!

Ask Angela

November 6, 2008 3:27 PM

From Tasha: Do you have advice for someone with a new-found love for improv?

Improv is one of my loves. I studied at Improv Olympic West (IOWest) in Hollywood. I would say get in a great class where you think you can grow. There is short form and long form improv. I prefer long form as a performance piece. Both forms are very useful in acting. And the whole philosophy of improv of saying "yes and" is beautiful. Saying yes to life but adding to it as well. Not a bad way to go. ;)

From Sara: How do you stay so grounded and down to earth when you are on such a popular show?

Well, I come from a very big Southern family. My relatives' occupations are varied. We have stay-at-home moms, teachers, nurses, marketing executives, oil men, farmers and the list goes on. Hollywood is a foreign concept to them and they do not give it any more value than anyone else's job. Everyone has worth in my family. My parents have done an amazing job instilling self-worth in all of us. And yes they love to tease me about my red carpet events and all of the craziness that goes on out here. We laugh a lot and don't take each other for granted. That keeps me pretty grounded. Plus my older sisters would seriously take me down a notch if I ever got too sassy!

From Colin: What do you do to prepare for the show?

Great question Colin. No one has ever asked me that. I read the whole script and then go back and reread my scenes. The night before I shoot the scenes I go over the scene a few times to get my lines memorized. My call time on set is usually around 5:30am and after I go through hair and makeup I have a little bit of time to myself. I go to my trailer and have breakfast and work on it some more concentrating now on performance since I have the lines down. If it is a really big scene I will go and bug Jenna or Phyllis to run it with me. Phyllis used to be a casting director and always has great insights. I feel very fortunate to have the type of cast that we do. The show really is a team effort and we help each other out all the time. Once on the set I might run the scene again with my fellow actor that is in that scene with me. For example, Rainn and I have stepped aside from the rest of the group to run lines.

From Charlotte: When was the first time someone recognized you as a celebrity? What did you do, freak out? I would freak out.

Hi there Charlotte! I can't remember the exact moment when I was first recognized but I can tell you at the time that I freaked out! ;) It was the Golden Globes two years ago. Jenna, Rashida and I were all chatting at the fancy after party. We heard this voice say, "Oh my God it's the ladies from The Office!" And it was Ben Affleck!!! He came up and gave us a big bear hug. I guess he and Jennifer are fans of the show. And then he called for Jennifer Garner (his lovely wife) to come over to say hi. My head was spinning. For a little gal from Archer City, TX....that was such a fun Hollywood moment!

November 6, 2008 11:18 AM

From Andy: What work are you looking to do, besides The Office? (I vote for talk show host.)
Hello Andy! I would love to have my own sitcom after my stint on The Office. And then someday maybe a talk show. ;) I love chatting with people. I love to see how people live. It shows us for the most part we have more in common in this world than we think. And knowing that is a good thing. Oscar jokes that he and I should have a talk show together. A morning Regis and Kelly kind of show. That makes me laugh because we have known each other for 9 years and I know we would have a blast together.

From Shannon: What is your and Jenna's favorite thing to do together?
Shannon, this is a tough one because the list is pretty long! We just enjoy being girls together mostly. We talk on the phone for hours. We hit Target with a vengeance. We are suckers for their seasonal items. You know like 4th of July napkins and Easter wreaths. Things we don't really need but think are so cute that we can't live without! We go on walks in our neighborhoods and meet for lunch. And chat and chat and chat! Rainn does an impression of us on set and he basically sounds like a bunch of hens clucking. ;) What can I say...she is like family to me and I feel so blessed to have her in my life.

Ask Angela

November 5, 2008 4:21 PM

Do people confuse you with your character?

Yes and no. I've had people tell the me that it's nice to see me smile or that they were afraid to come and say hi because they thought I might be mean! The recent phenomenon is the whole cat thing. Yes, I do have two cats in real life but my character is a true "cat lady" and people have really tapped into that. Fans have sent me a cat lady doll that came with cat figurines, cat stickers, and my cat Lucy's picture on real stamps! Now my family has gotten into it. Recently my ninety year old Grandmother sent me a 2008 Cat Calendar, my sister sent me a cat picture frame and stationery, my mother-in-law sent me a cat Christmas ornament and my Mom sent me a cat stuffed animal for the baby (it's white and fluffy and looks like Sprinkles!). This could get out of control. ;)

What has been your favorite Angela Martin moment so far?

My favorite Angela Martin moment so far would have to be the very first Christmas episode. It was the first Angela Martin meltdown. After a long day of shooting, it was the last shot of the day. They had three different guys working fake snow machines. Two on top of the building and one in a crane above me. It was dark and kinda cold out. It really felt like winter even though we were in Southern California. I got to throw ornaments and stomp on them and scream all while snowing was gently falling. It was awesome!
