YOGA BASICS

Yoga has undeniable benefits to the body and soul and follows five basic principles: Relaxation, Exercise, Breathing, Diet and Meditation. There are also different styles of yoga, depending on an individual's current fitness level and goals. One of the most popular styles is Hatha Yoga, which focuses on the physical well-being of a person and embraces the idea that the body is the vehicle of the spirit.
The meditative aspects of yoga can help ease tension and focus thoughts. One of the benefits of yoga is that it can be practiced anywhere and with little equipment. Just wear comfortable clothing, and if you are on a hard surface, use a mat or towel as a cushion.
There are a wide variety of yoga poses that help the body's energy flow. These poses, used in conjuction with calm, even breathing, help restore the body's balance in addition to strengthening your core muscles.
Some simple poses to help get you started are below. As with any exercise, please consult your physician before trying anything new or strenuous. Remember to breath slowly and steadily during these exercises, and to stop if you experience any discomfort.
