SPECIAL APPEARANCES

Jim Henson's Muppets

Appearances: First Season

Jim Henson's "The Muppets" appeared in ten early SNL episodes as part of Henson's attempt to broaden the appeal of his creations to an adult audience. For the most part, SNL writers and cast members didn't like working with these characters, with top writer Michael O'Donoghue famously saying, "I don't write for felt." Because of this attitude, writing assignments for The Muppets typically went to junior staff members, most notably Al Franken and Tom Davis.

These segments centered around the mysterious Land of Gorch, which was ruled over by the inept King Ploobis, who frequently sought counsel from the Mighty Favog, a gigantic Muppet statue.
