Born in 1964 in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Molly Shannon's early life was marred with tragedy. At four, she was in a car crash that killed her mother, her little sister, and an older cousin. As a young girl, she always dreamed of becoming an actress, perhaps as a way of coping with such a monumental loss at such a young age.
After graduating from New York University with a degree in drama, she set about making her dreams come true by moving to Hollywood, but found reality to be a far different thing than what she had imagined. She struggled to find work as an actress, instead bouncing from odd job to odd job while struggling to pay the rent. The biggest part she managed to land was as "Meg" in the 1989 version of "The Phantom of the Opera" starring Robert Englund of "Nightmare on Elm Street" fame.
Her big break came in 1995 when she was cast as an SNL featured player. For six years, she proved herself time and again as a talented actress and comedienne, becoming one of the most popular female SNL cast members of all time. After leaving the show, she returned to Hollywood and to her abandoned movie career. This time around, however, the offers started to come and her plate is full for many years to come.
