Before he was the Cat in the Hat, the voice of Shrek, and super-spy Austin Powers, comedian/actor/screenwriter Mike Myers was a six-season SNL veteran. Although his parents are from Liverpool, England, Myers was born in Canada and grew up in Scarborough, Ontario with performing in his blood. His mother studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before moving to Canada and raising a family, while his dad wouldn't let anyone in their house unless he or she had a sense of humor (Myers has said that his father was the inspiration for the Austin Powers character).
Myers' first acting job came when he was eight. It was for a TV commercial that starred, almost prophetically, SNL legend Gilda Radner. As a child, he appeared in other TV commercials and on Canadian television shows. As a teenager, he developed the "Wayne Campbell" character to impress girls at parties and later portrayed him in the TV series "It's Only Rock and Roll."
SNL producer Lorne Michaels was a hero of Myers' from an early age, and as soon as he graduated from high school he joined Toronto's Second City company where he honed his comic craft. Hired by SNL in 1989, he soon became a fan favorite with such memorable characters as Wayne, Dieter, and Linda Richman.
In 1992 he started a successful transition to the movies with the "Wayne's World" feature and hasn't looked back. He was critically acclaimed for his dramatic performance as nightclub owner Steve Rubell in "54" while the Austin Powers and Shrek movies have become beloved by audiences around the world.
