Laraine Newman was born in 1952 and raised in Southern California where she attended Beverly Hills High School and the California Institute of the Arts. Her professional debut was with the Los Angeles-based The Groundlings, a sketch/improv comedy troupe that has proved to be fertile ground for fresh SNL talent over the years. In addition to her training with The Groundlings, she was also a student of mime and a member of the Richmond Shepard Mime Troupe.
As an SNL member, she was most noted for playing the alien teenager Laarta in the Coneheads sketches, though at times her role on the show was overshadowed by Gilda Radner and Jane Curtin.
Her five-season stint with SNL launched her into a successful TV and movie career that includes many notable highlights such as Woody Allen's "Stardust Memories" and the more recent "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." She is also in demand as a voice-over artist for various cartoon characters.
