Southerner Jan Hooks proved to be a great addition to the SNL cast when she joined the show in 1986. Hailing from Georgia, she spent her childhood in Atlanta and in Florida, where her interest in acting supplanted her interest in cheerleading while in high school. After appearing in regional theater in Florida, she returned to Atlanta where she joined the New Wits End Players. After her stint there, she moved to Los Angeles and became a member of The Groundlings theater company where she met Paul Reubens, which led to her first notable film role: She can be seen as the Alamo tour guide in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure." The following year she joined SNL where she remained for six years.
During her tenure, she became known for her over-the-top impersonations of such figures as Tammy Faye Baker, Hilary Clinton, Bette Davis, Sinead O'Conner, Sally Jessy Raphael, Nancy Reagan, and Diane Sawyer, among others. Upon leaving the show, she appeared as a cast member in the sitcom "Designing Women." Other TV, film, and voice-over work followed, and she remains in demand for her versatile comedic talents.
